Unfortunetly I didn't enjoy the video so much. It didn't feel like the sounds with the background nudity and I would've liked it better if Maja (the singer) would sing while walking around. But I liked how fragments from the lyrics was showed now and then. Especially in the end when they're leaving with the car.
Is that a real one-take or did I see a seamless edit there?
Eh, I don't know... it was okay. It looked great and the effect was seemless, but the whole "reverse" thing is kinda boring these days, and the text flying around was really overkill. I think Ace Norton is a little overrated. A little too much ink is spilled on him to justify the work he's done.

this video looks great and ultimately doesn't really add up to much. I think the concept got away from him. There's a lot going on, and yet it's a really boring video. and the words had no point being in the video, they're not even integrated into the reality of the place they're in. people keep telling me ace norton is a new great, but I'm not seeing it. nothing's proven it to me yet.
I thought this was nice, better than what's on TV.
i thought it was great but i didn't get it. There was some trick but but it's less like "How did they do that?" than "What was that?"
Reasons why people are talking about Ace Norton: 1)He has a rad name. 2) He's freaking young (24). 3) He's been extremely innovative with small budgets. 4) He has mad stop motion skills. 5) He has a fun, recognizable style. 6)He runs his own little production cabal of rad directors. 7)His head blows up. 8)He consistently pumps out videos, each one a little better than the next. 9) He has a cool name.
If anything, I suggest checking out his site: commondeer.com. I agree that there's been a lot of hype around him, but that' s not really his fault. He's just trying to do cool stuff.

- He's a rich kid.
- Family members work in the industry.
- He's the model of young hipster LA promo director.
- His name is pure hollywood swank.
As for my nominee, it goes without saying Martin DeThurah may just be our "new great".

Kudos, Lusk. I agree...eccept for the bit about the promo. I like his first Willows video better then this.
But I agree with you on Martin DeThurah. He reminds me of Glazer a bit, which can never be bad.

every ace norton video i've seen is an obvious rip off of something. they are all pretty well done and I'm sure he's patient or has talented friends, but i think his ideas are surprisingly unoriginal.
this newest video feels like a movie trailer for a movie I don't want to see.
his sebastien whatever video is a remake of a jon watts video made about a year earlier.
his faint video feels like a reel of animation tests compiled after an intro to animation class, that have nothing to do with each other.
his death cab for cutie video is a "remake" of sledge hammer according to him. What is this world coming to when people are starting to remake music videos.
I could go on but I feel like i'm being mean. there are far worse injustices going on in the world and I really shouldn't waste any time caring...but as long as you guys were discussing it....
i'm sure he's a really great guy.

i would luuuuuurve to see some of the work by all those people who bitch on this site. I bet half of them couldn't even take a lens cap off. No one is perfect, even someone like Gondry. Seeing peoples individual ideas come to life is a privilage, no matter whether the idea is lame or groundbreaking. If everything was beautiful, nothing would be beautiful...
never heard of this dude until this post, went to commondeer and checked out his other shit. This dude seems like the real deal. The willowz video was fucking great. I dont think they are all great, but he does seem to be doing some interesting things. Anyways as for this video. I thought it cool. Better than most videos that are coming out...and the song is hot.

this was fun to watch and held my interest.
i have an issue with the floating text. although a great idea, it would have been greater if if the text were printed on the random clubbers' shirts or hats or something. a minor detail like that would have brought the video up to another level, and is probably cheaper than what was done.
I'm floored by the jealousy and naysaying, but if there ever were a place for it, this is it. It's funny to say "everyone's talking about Ace Norton" because that's really not true. Maybe in the clique-ish mini-microcosm of video directors, but in the big, scary world, most people don't even know who Michel Gondry is.
This reminds me of my high school years and the talk of punk bands "selling out" because other people had heard of them. Gimme a break. All this whining and complaining about any modicum of success Ace has gained does a disservice to the filmmaking community. What's good for Ace Norton is good for the MV community as a whole. The more supportive we are, the better.
That's my hope for this site, that it could transform into more of a celebration of a dying artform, than an enclave of nitpickers.

From now on, someone should be designated to call out jealous whiners and doofy jaded hipster types on this site. The video isn't really my style, but its obviously the work of someone who knows what they're doing. To suggest that a 24 year old who's directing work at this level sucks is kind of crazy.

I was trying to be civil and somewhat constructive. All I said was that he was overrated and I do think that way. I never said he wasn't a talented guy. He obviously is and yeah, this promo is way better the most of what's out there. It's just not worthy of exaulting him to Romanek like status overnight, which is what the MV press is trying to do. One Willows video and a few low budgets for some local LA bands and Partizan signs him? A little premature if you ask me. But I wish him well...and at 24 he can only get better, which he almost certainly will.
yeah. obviously he's not the suckiest person ever. but those people aren't worth discussing. the thing about ace is that all of his videos are almost good, and that's almost more annoying.

the text was something the label insisted on, it wasn't something ace wanted. what's annoying to me about this video is the artis(s) and the attitude they want expressed in their 'clubbing' video. i kinda that in anyone else's hands apart from ace's, they could have come across as much much more irritating, and the video could have been way more hateful.
