Pharrell - Angel : Dir. Hype Williams
Three things.
1 - Quite interestingly, this is a second version of the video after a first version was ditched before managing to get out of production. You can see the earlier version here; it's suggested that it was put together by Little X.
2 - lusk, is this just another post? Or is it meant to refute/consolidate the criticism of Hype Williams which has been bubbling up here recently?
3 - I found the video itself sufficiently uninspiring to mention this fact third
Mmmmmmm... Cupcakes... :O*************
Why Hype, why? Dude has officially become a factory.
with his "solo"-record it turned out that pharell is not musician, not a composer and not a songwriter - he's producer & beat-inventer, a very good one though, but this here? - this is sooooo poor. and the video is pure poor too. is there any other idea then collecting girls? the sexism-standards are falling down but this IS sexistic.
Speaking ov which Spreech, a term I believe, has just been coined, it is called 'raunch culture', and the women are referred to as FCP's - female chauvinist pigs - I swear! I ain't made it up
It's in a critique by author Ariel Levy concerning her analysis ov big business co-opting women into mainstreaming the commercialisation ov porn in Bush's America
You'll be delighted to know Paris Hilton is considered one ov raunch culture's role model's
Stars are indeed blind - apparently!
There's a real sense of apathy here, I'm afraid. You can often spot a Hype Williams video from the alt-footage framing of the main video, or 'B-roll Bars' as kev noted in this LL Cool J number and antecendents.
However the downside is a nadir such as Beyonce's Check Up On It (watch it here). Perhaps someone saw potential in this technique for shoehorning in footage of the awful Pink Panther remake to which Beyonce's (not much better) single was tied.
This is worse than even that though. No effort has been made to provide any alternative in the split screen. All I can think is that salvaging the video against a release deadline necessitated some corner cutting, but that's the generous line
Some serious Ego Fuckoness here. 18 frames into the video it says HYPE. Not only is this tacky and stupid but the guy doesn't even have the respect to add Pharrell's name first. I couldn't make it much further than that.
QUIX: Have you seen a Hype video in the past decade? Every one starts like that.
I actually like it. It's like a bugle call or sorts. And after, you know exactly what's coming: HYPE.
Boy, that looks horrible.
so to mix things up he added a frame around the live portion. wow. that was pretty deep. i'm sure this one came in at a budget friendly $2.9m. but what a ridiculously boring video. there are just too many reasons why he is not on my favorite director list.
30frames weighs in on this (and kanye's gondry/plympton affair).
