the lead's nicely cast. i think you would have done better with less of a narrative. some moments (him dancing in the bar) are stronger than others - would have been better to go with the strengths and build the rhythm of the video to the flow of the song. hopefully next time you'll be able to convince a d.o.p. to lend a hand.
All in all, very nice. You capture the emotion and theme of the song without feeling like you're just literally illustrating it. I agree that the lead is well cast.
I actually disagree a bit with progosk--I thought that it could have used MORE of a narrative, and the point where he started dancing at the bar was the point where you started to lose me. It felt a bit like you had run out of narrative ideas at that point.
Perhaps we're both right--maybe you should have either gone for a more detailed and specific narrative, or let yourself be freer to show evocative moments which don't tie together.
Despite my lull of interest in the middle, I still felt this was a very effective and touching video, and I hope you'll continue to post your work here.
Lovely and definitely touching. Some of the devices felt a little hackneyed. Big car drives away to reveal small car behind..... just a bit too old hat for my taste.
Considering the presumably small budget - it looks distinctively DV and largely available light - you've pulled off a pretty incredible casting coup..... That is Oliver Chris from Green Wing and The Office, right?
Yeah it is - Oli's a mate of mine and has just the right kind of "I'm a tiny bit famous" and "people sort-of recognise me" to know exactly what its like to be on the fringes of celebrity. Although as far as I know he's never been asked to open a supermarket... yet... Thanks for all the comments and feedback. Good to know that I'm sort of on the right track and hopefully next time I'll have more than £100 to spend, more than 5 days from idea to final cut, and not have to shoot the thing myself - I'm well aware of my limitations in that department! Thanks for the encouragement!
For £100 and 5 days I think it's pretty amazing.
Agreed.
