What an abortion of a video.

Have the band and their management collectively forgotten the 'Oasis Quo' jibe Damon Albarn levelled at them nearly a decade ago? This is quite clearly the video for Status Quo's Pictures of Matchstick Men, writ large: www.youtube.com

Unfortunately I can imagine that the animation was commissioned purely on the strength of a storyboard that showed the band that in the opening moments there'd be a weak pastiche of Help (the 'Fab' four principles live in adjacent terraced houses) and the Abbey Rd Album cover. The animated Liam's swaggering gait makes him look like Richard Ashcroft in that Bittersweet Symphony video. The animated Noel looks like McCartney in Yellow Submarine - after he's been chained to a radiator in a darkend room for 6 weeks :-(

Still, the song itself is an awful 'megamix' of late 90s Oasis hits so in that respect a trudging, overwrought, animated dirge fits it like a glove.

         

we all know that very little thought goes into the average oasis video. I remember seeing the dom & nic promo for..........ummm.....one of their songs with loads of heli-clopters flying around.......and that was it.......or who could remember the other video..........for that other song that sounded like..........everyother song. But i knew i was gonna like this one by just looking at the the screen still above. The cartton swaggers, it's beautifully drawn, it's dark, slightly moving in parts but most importantly it has a sense of humour. We all love to hate oasis.....me included but when you compare this to oasis's new millenium contemporaries such as kasabian or razorlight, you cannot deny the charm this promo holds. And as for the jibes concerning how oasis copy this, oasis copy that............look at all forms of 20th century art whether film, music painting, fashion, photography............we all look at the past as reference........its the people who deny this and see their art as NEW.......when it obviously isnt...........these are people who need to come down a notch........oasis steal with a wry smile.......:)

I was ready to hate this, the whole concept seeming to arrive from a throwaway stream of conciousness ......oasis.manchester.salford.lowry centre.animated lowry video. also im not the biggest fan of oasis or lowry.

thankfully the characters were stylishly rendered, dont think it would have worked if the characters were actually lowry-esque matchstick men.

couple of really weak bits let it down though, especially the singing liam section, and the song is absolute sheeeeeiiiitttttt in the sunsheeeeine

         

the band are notorious for hating videos - being in them, making any kind of effort, bothering to turn up at all - so its easy to see why their commissioner has plumped for animation as the best way forward

i think they abandoned an idea half way through with spike jonez back in the day which lead to dom and nic's helicopter idea which i think lead to another lapse of concentration from liam on the shoot day

i'm guessing the lowry reference is more to do with where the band and artist come from than a stream of consciousness on the lowry centre and whatever that may be and i think its a really clever idea

my only negative is that the track does go on for what seems a very long time but that's through no fault of the directors who are ben and greg

         

Oasis can perform in a video. They just need to be handled sympathetically. Needless to say, only one director has come close to nailing the atmosphere of one of their live performances;

The Lowry reference is pure Status Quo :-(

         

What a HUGE waste of a really good Oasis song. I didn't feel moved one bit - how could you with such drab (as artistic as it may be) imagery. At least 'All Around The World' was colourful and fun. It's almost saying to the viewer "be miserable with us". Come on - this is a music video not an art film. It's meant to lift the music. This just squelches it.

I wonder why they didn't go for something more anthemic?
