U2 & Green Day "The Saints Are Coming" Dir. Chris Milk

www.chrismilk.com

Post-Election discussion of Chris Milk's conceptual commentary please...

I'll start. Only Chris Milk could take what was reported as a studio/performance docu-style video and use the opportunity to successfully posit an alternate history with vastly different national priorites. The use of archival footage we are all too familiar with places the reality in stark contrast with the fantastical images of swarms of American military deployment to the flooded streets of New Orleans.

Not to indulge in hyperbole, but a tip of the hat to the man who sadly seems to be the lone mainstream director willing to utilize our medium to remind us about the goddamn war. (Ed: Forgot about Floria for a second...)

Side note: I used the shitty screen grab from the Huffington blog because every time I tried to upload a good one it did TypeError: undefined is not a function. Anyone else have this problem?

I wasn't sure about this one. I felt it was far too blatant, an almost childish comment on what happened. Technically it was great - it all looked extremely realistic and polished, it was just the idea i had a problem with. I also felt uneasy about all these people being used in the video - is it exploitative? something for discussion i guess...fire away...

as i remember the people of New Orleans were waiting for help. "the saints" in the video were created by computer because they didn't came in time

What's funny it's that if the video goes to air a majority of americans will believe that's what happened in new orleans. Totally counter productive.

  • def better effects than that preposterous greenhalgh/faithless gig (prob'ly with a lesser budget)
  • abominable song. how the hell did u2 end up paired with green day?! the shame... (n.i.n. and saul williams - that was a striking post-katrina double-bill.)
  • ai's got a point. who even remembers what happened in n.o. at all anyway?

I actually think the Greenhalgh video is awesome, and the effects have a certain charm about them i really like. But thats another thread...

Yeah i wasn't sure about the song either, and the more i think about it - the more i feel this video doesn't do anything with the idea. just throws it in there, but then again - maybe that's a good thing. i just wonder if something a little more subtle could have been more effective and more though provoking.

still - nice to see someone doing something bold and daring, which always gets my vote.

nice effort, probably good on paper, but failure to get a point across overall.
