Sufjan Stevens "John Wayne Gacy Jr." (Dir: Claire Carré) SPEC
g ram's post of the spec "Peach Plum Pear" with found footage below reminded me of my own found footage spec, which I made back when Sufjan's Illinois album first came out. Not very cheery.

This song always hits me so hard and the visuals really add to it. Especially the family footage. I think you could even do a whole video with that stuff. I wonder if there's any way you could actually track down real footage. Hmm. Awesome.
know what? though this is really competently done, it's so didactic it becomes a placid accompaniment. this song is a risky foray into, an exploration of pretty difficult themes (plus it bears a mysterious core/coda: "i am really just like him"). as such, i would think it really deserves visuals that are equally less... resolved, more questioning. i'm not sure this necessarily calls for different material, or whether it's just a question of less complacent editing.
Thanks guys! I always love comments. When I made it a year ago I felt like it really worked, but now a year later I feel like the editing is too on the nose. Still, it was great to experiment with free found footage instead of a production budget.
