Expatriate "Play A Part" Dir. Kris Moyes
..and vaguely Street Spirit-ish. See also Tortoise "Salt the Skies"
wtf? that tortoise was so positively definitely already on antville, but now there's no trace?!
(btw, k: by my book, it's jazz, and pretty awesome, at that.)
I love the phantom camera as much as the next guy, it's a good solution if you have no bucks but this type of video, although done well, just fails to impress anymore.
I don't think it's the Phantom trick itself that isn't impressive here, its what they did with it in the video. This seems like C roll footage with no thought or effort put into it.
I like it. its simple and good.
exactly, spit. It seems like they got the camera and then thought "shit, what shall we do with it?...err, shake you heads guys, that'll look good (not)...err, Jump! Yay! (nope)...lets get fire (worked for Massive Attack but, not here folks)..." SUCH a shame as it's an amazing camera and Moyes has fucking great concepts but this is last minute, copied homework that the dog should have eaten. Sorry but I hate seeing wasted opportunities...
seriously! I can't believe he even had shots of them standing completely still.
ANY concept would've been cool.
any phanton vid has to live up to Paul Gore's massive attack, this doesnt come any where near, Kris you can do better!
Anyone have links to other Phantom videos (besides the overrated Massive Attack one)? Also, is it really that cheap to rent? What are we talking for a weekend rate?

no link but think chris cairns used one on maximo park last year - am guessing its on the partizan site
I admire the willingness to let the shots linger and force a visual tempo that counterpoints the song, but the video suffers from its overreach, that in order to work at all it has to work monumentally. If the shots had the kind of gravitas and imprint-on-your-mind potency of say, Radiohead's Street Spirit, then it would work fabulously. The video strives for that kind of stirring presence but falls just short, though many of the shots are quite beautiful.
That said, all of the images and scenes in Moyes' Presets video imprint themselves very well. Maybe a lip-syncing robotic spider?
The new Phantom v7.0 supplies the blazing speed and high sensitivity needed to record the extremely fast events that were once the exclusive domain of rotating prism film cameras, or simply beyond the capabilities of existing digital high speed imaging systems. The v7.0's new SR-CMOS sensor developed by Vision Research, Inc. has been designed exclusively for extremely high speed while also supplying resolution that rivals small and medium format motion picture film. This new sensor also continues to offer the advanced features of our previous designs including the on-chip circuitry that provides true "snap shot" shutter capabilities, auto exposure, and pixel level Extreme Dynamic Range® (EDR) control to extend picture quality in harsh lighting conditions.
The new Phantom v7.0 your first choice for no-idea videos of bands with at least one young Ringo Star look alike.
A phantom will run you around 2G's a weekend. As amazing as they are, it is a very cumbersome system to work with
1 - no viewfinder, only through an attached computer or onboard monitor can you see what you shoot.
2 - The camera only has about 16gb of memory, meaning you have to shoot, decided if you want it, then wait 15 minutes to transfer the data or delete the shot.
3 - They suck up a ton of light.
4 - They use nikon/photo lenses, which makes pulling focus nearly impossible.
Check Ramon Bloomberg's Green Spirit or Birds by Pliex (both on the Blimp site) for more work done with the phantom.
I doubt this was a phantom though, the image quality (besides being black and white) is not very good. Phantoms can shoot 1200 x 1200 resolution. There are a bunch of companies that make high speed digital cameras, so this could easily be another make/model.

Yeah, not feeling it either. His other videos have been so strong, that's why I think there's such a relatively negative reaction to this one. Victim of his own success ;) Nintendo Wii
