The Hitcher : Dir. Dave Meyers
Meyers' first feature.
Pretty cool. But this isnt his 1st feature film. He directed a Master P film at some point.
Not music video?
No ant, not a music video. But something made by a music video director and worthy of a post.
Gonna be tough to top Rutger Hauer. And why do the leads have to be so dang pretty in these movies? It'd be scarier if it was more real.
FUNG you're absolutely right. The trend in hollywood (and indie!) casting tends to lean way too heavily on the young model look. Not only does that go against the audience's immediate involvement in story and character, but also places the context of the work in such a weirdly commercialized world that it ultimately hurts the effectiveness and longevity of the piece.
Also, notice how this work is the norm feature gig for commercial/mv directors. The commodified remake.
Yeah, cause Hollywood hasn't been casting pretty people in lead roles for the last 80 years.
And Lusk, are you trying to say that this job is somehow a bad thing for Meyers or MV directors in general? I'm sure that Meyers is elated to have the oppurtunity to make a "commodified remake." Last time I checked he didn't really seem like the art house type, and to be honest, I'd rather see this than sit through Science of Sleep again.
Hmmm. This doesn't look too promising.
Can't be worse than his last attempt, though: Foolish
"Eddie Griffin plays Foolish Waise (har har!), a comic enlisted to help his brother (Master P) open up a new stand-up club. Pretty much a bad excuse to work in stand-up material courtesy of Griffin, scenes with Andrew Dice Clay, and buxom, naked chicks.
Foolish? Atrocious."
SPIT: I'm sure Meyers was thrilled. Last time I checked, he was a production machine.
As for MV directors in general, this is not good or bad but simply the norm - TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, HOUSE OF WAX, DAWN OF THE DEAD, THE CELL, etc.
If you're really looking to define things, it ultimately depends on which side of the fence you stand. If making one of the above is something to look forward to, then so be it.
But as for the last 80 years, there's a big difference between the ginger rogers and audrey hepburn types and the kids who look like they're straight out of a GAP commercial.
As for the your last comment, there's no real reason to lambast gondry's work on this site - you'll be met with fierce indignation!
What's you email. Would love to talk outside this world.
can't remember who said it but...why bother making decent new films when there are so many bad ones to remake?
Kind of depressing that when one of the most financially successful MV directors of all time decides he wants to make a movie; the best he gets is a shitty B movie remake that could have just as easily been handed to a promising film school grad... or Rob Zombie.
there are a couple things going against this movie before it even opens. it's fairly obvious from the trailer the female lead can't act. it also has no recognizable stars. and lastly it has a mid-january release date...considered to be the dumping ground for films between the award season films and the spring/early summer blockbuster launches. dave's a good guy. he's smart. cant figure out why he took this one on. but hey, maybe he will surprise us and it turns out to be the next u-turn. ha.
Sean Bean makes any film he is in brilliant for precisley the same amount of time he is on screen. It's what they call the Boromir Factor.
Pining for Ginger Rogers! Just how old ARE you? These films are aimed at kids. They have the time and money, they didnt see the original, and they like to look at pretty bodies... blame hormones. The fact people are bemoaning the quality of the long form produce of directors who previously worked in the music video industry just goes to show what a hollow vessel the industry is. You say its ok for vids to take ideas from older vids or films or art & then criticise the lameness of doing exactly that in features... i agree its stinks, but how can you expect anything more than remakes from from a generation brought up to think the way forward is to either make sly nods and winks to older superior work, or rip wholesale from lesser known genius in the hope nobody notices. Post modern my arse. Pop will eat itself. yadda yadda.
90% of music videos ARE those commodified remakes. i am hungover by the way.
Im sorry, but nothing will beat Wolf Creek.
