The Dance Party, "Victory Will Break Your Heart," Directed by Frank Turner
Hey, this is the first video I directed for an unsigned band out of Washington, DC, "The Dance Party."
Was done on mini-DV for zero bucks, and is a bit grainy being ripped for youtube, but I'd love to get some feedback.
Thanks a mil, Frank
I think the grainy uTubeness helps the look out. If I knew you didn't ponder the meaning and allegory for too long. If I knew you didn't spend more than a few hours filming it. If I knew it didn't take more than a day to edit. Well if I knew those things for sure, then I would say that it is a great little video for nothing down.
"Lets put a fat man, haunted by his past, bemoaning his portly state intercut with some goofy video footage of the band playing their song in Uncle Cliff's basement. And lets do it today."
I mean, if that was the thought process, and nothing more...
Nice low budget video.
cant they just say cool vid with out having to sound elitest, it's a great video beacuse it was done for the simple reason of exploring one's creative instinct. I wish we all had a $7000 budget and already own a dual core mac and a hd setup. we start small hoping to be the next gondry. that being send check out my stuff
and on antville: videos.antville.org videos.antville.org same stuff but on antville

keep making good shit ,
the story part works well, tho it kind of stops short; the performance is, as often, totally out of place. (what's with the drummer's wig?)
I guess for me naranjan, it is not a great vid simply because it was done for exploring one's creative instinct. Exploring one's creative instinct is a good thing but can make all sorts of crap.
I am all for making a quick and dirty video that works. This video is quick and dirty, it seems, and so it works. If there was more thought than say 15 minutes put into this thing, then it is a bad video. A really bad video.
To toddyokoh: It's good in a john waters-well he did do something and it is his own unique voice sort of way- and by the way your so Dogme95 with your fancy videos and whatnot, get with the times, crap is what's in vogue.
but seriously went to your sight, really good stuff
Wow, this site is harsh!
So, the director responds:
The video definitely took more than 15 min of thought and effort. : )
It was a tough mission: the song is only 2:30 minutes long. In retrospect I wouldn't have crammed so much, or any story, into it. But that was my learning curve; first music vid, so I learned a lot.
I feel that music vids should be like photographs, just capturing the vibe of a song.
That said, I think I was successful--I tried to capture the band/song's high energy, yet the song has a lot of melancholy notes which I tried to nail with the story about the guy and his love/hate relationship with food/himself.
Anyway, I'm glad you guys took the time to watch the vid. I'll check out your stuff.
Progosk, I tend to agree that performance is usually out of place in vids.
And to neranjan, I agree that vids are more about creative instinct in the sense that you have to transmit the vibe/feeling you get from a song. It's a very personal thing.
Good luck on future projects to all (I'm psyched to tackle more myself)!
