Ive been waiting for this one - Deftones thru the eyes of Gourley. and now that i see it...damn.

Really dissapointed with this. This track flat out deserved a better treatment. This seems like a one day throwaway shoot. The outdoor footage is clean and has the Gourley type framing, but its lazy. The bouncing car wasted. The band shots uninspired. The BMX flip over the band was cool, though. The transition to the night footage is horrible- musically motivated, but in no way visually motivated. Chino doing the dance moves was cool and fun though. Gourley is better than this.
Agreed, this one is just bizarre.
I give Gourley points for breaking away from the metal/hard rock stereotype in that first half. He didn't quite hit it, though. Maybe the editor left some better footage on the floor?
That second half isn't really worth mentioning, unfortuantely.
It's painful how outdated this imagery is. Rooftop performance, breakdancers, BMX? This is like a gorgeous Limp Bizkit video.
i think gourley edits his own stuff. But i would'nt doubt if he doesnt, as much work as he is getting these days...
Urgh. That song is definitely not for me. But the video didn't really do it any favors either. The after dark stuff was a waste. The daylight imagery had great color and photography (standard for Mr. Gourley) but all the bouncing cars and spinning b-boys felt like a bag of cliches tossed on the screen when a simpler, minimalist frame would have been much better, at least IMO. That transfer look in the daylight is great, but the only thing not metallic blue/grey/green was the drummer's hat and I could not stop staring at it. BTW - did the lead singer used to be in Los Lobos?
zzzzzzingg!
yeah, gourley's photography is always on point. anyone know if he uses the same DP and if so, who?
i wasn't feeling the imagery in this video at all. didnt work with the song and seems to have been covered in a very minimalist approach. if anything this is a perfect example of how the drastic drop in rock budgets is affecting videos. compare this to paul fedor's deftones video and you'll see what a few extra hundred thousand dollars can buy you. www.paulfedor.com
I assume that every director is different in terms of which music makes them dream visuals in their heads. I know that the visual stuff that I am obsessed with fits a particular type of music, and only really comes alive when I listen to that stuff.
It upsets me when I see a music video for the music I love (and dream along to) that seems to be utterly dislocated from the track. Yeah, the location, photography, coverage is nice. But the concept? A massive wasted opportunity if you ask me. Fedor's vid is miles better. In my opinion, Deftones best vid...
