future of music: EMI drops DRM; Merlin; etc.
today emi, in a joint communiqué with online music overlord steve jobs, announced it's abandoning drm.
in other news, independent labels are set to become the world's fifth (and largest) "major": merlin.
meantime, yesterday's spoof riaa challenger rara seems less of a prank by the minute...

In RARA's list of participating labels a few stick out like a sore thumb: 4AD, Matador, Saddle Creek.

small print: to the tune of a 30% price hike for singles... emi also mentioned they "plan to remove DRM from their video downloads".
