Why do we need Procter & Gamble (or Honda Civic) when we have Company X. Fall Out Boy "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs" (Alan Ferguson) mov.
I didn't even notice that stuff at first, but it's all over, in't it? Chevy Tahoe, a Nokia, TAG..
Isn't Fall Out Boy the kind of band that can get labels to cough up big money for videos? Or is that exclusively Pussy Cat Doll territory these days? Chevy is all over the new Gwen Stefani video as well.
spit - Yes, FOB prolly can get money out of the labels, but the labels would rather pony up $50k less. Why not get an advertiser involved? The fact that an artist CAN get labels to pay for a decent MV budget probably means that they are exactly the kind of artist that would be attractive to product placers. And it is definitely NOT "extra" money for the video, the labels now plan on getting support from Nokia/Axe/Chevy and have less $$$ to put in themselves. I have heard that all the new label contracts with MV budget specifcs in them (like "label will spend $X or more on the first video and $Y on the second video - with an addtl $Z for every 100k in sales") count product placement money as dollars the labels are "spending" even though the labels are not coughing it up themselves. It is not a gain for the artist/director/budget at all.
yup, thats exactly whats happening. A lot of people are under the misconception that product placement means more money for the video, but usually it just subsidizes an already garbage budget. in some cases, such as alan ferguson's previous FOB videos the product placement is the only way the concept can even be made. This last video for "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs" is some of the worst and most blantant product placement I've seen. We've come to expect a cell phone here and there and cars galore, but AXE body spray? Yes indeed. Believe it or not, your less obvious companies are getting involved in the product placement game. A cherry company (you read that right CHERRIES) put up a significant amount of money for Diddy's "Last Night" video directed by Marc Webb. Also, MILK is offering some decent money for product placement. A shot of Jewel (female vocalist) drinking from a glass of milk in the kitchen for her Alan Ferguson's directed video almost made the cut, but failed. It's a new breed of music video...an ugly mutant breed that should be locked in the basement.
"CD sales are declining but the cost of making a video is not" - huh?
"'sounds like a great idea,' said Scott Booker, who manages the alternative rock band the Flaming Lips. [...] younger fans are less likely to perceive such deals as 'selling out.'” - the flaming lips? just a brand...
Yeah, this just doesn't add up.
Hey, wait! The MTV version of this erases the TAG logo. Tahoe survived in tact, but I didn't catch Nokia in time.
I'd be interested in seeing if the logo survives on other networks, particularly MuchMusic..
'course! now they can deliver tailored cuts for each specific channel demographic. brilliant...
on this subject i'm with david.
I'd pretty much agree. How often does product placement actually cause an increase in sales, and not merely cachet?
A+ progosk!
I'm with you and David (ha) on this one.
Interesting to note as well: Why is Lynch the last filmmaker left from the once stellar pile of kings? The rest have become so overwhelmingly soft. What rot.
Ok so this is just my opinion. But any band that believes they need that extra endorsement of cash to make a better video are themselves products above and beyond anything. As much as this sounds and looks like a nastey trend its totally honest when you think about it. FOB area product at best. MTV is a shithole. FOB on MTV with Axe body spray all over it... seems pretty appropriate to me.
Im more baffeled by the manger of The Flaming Lips. Maybe this explains Wayne Coyne wrapped in meats and sausage links in the Traktor video. Did Oscar Meyer pay for that?
