Hey y'all,
I've been doing some cursory research, and have even tried contacting MoMA, but I have no definitive answer to this question: How many, and which, music videos are in MoMA's permanent collection? I know Romanek's Closer and Bedtime Stories are, but haven't found any more information.
Cheers-- Kev
here's the new link to their '03 golden oldies show, listing a few; here's an nyt review of it (subs. req.), plus some quaint period commentary.
I know Phoenix's Funky Squaredance directed by Roman Coppola is.
oh, that's a surprise. i love that video.
Ah, I missed that top part about their "extensive collection of music videos". So do they do stuff with that shit or am I totally getting the wrong impression here?
i contacted moma about this very thing a few years ago.
i was told that they had an archive of nearly all videos played on mtv in the early years. your best bet is to speak to an archivist there, or if you're in the uk there was a show at the ica a few years back called 'remix' which may lead to contacts who can help.
Funky Squaredance is the greatest video ever made, but Pinball Cha Cha is also in the collection? Seriously? I'd be very interested in a listing of MoMA's music video collection.
