MV News: Director's Label Dead? MTV Redesigns it's Site.

Also MTV has redesigned it's site to be html. I'm pretty sure the videos still won't work for Mac users/foreigners though. Is that right? Tell them how much it sucks at their lab site.

The best move MTV has made all year. If they want to keep up with youtube and myspace and reclaim their status as the cultural apex for American youth, they need to have a site that's as easy to navigate as say, stereogum or idolator. I can actually see myself visiting that site again.
As for the DL dvd's, maybe that's not such a bad thing. Of the 7 that were released, I'd say 4 were really fantastic, and the others felt a little forced. They should keep it legit and only release ones that are truly necessary. I mean, I love sticking it to antvillians for not giving hip-hop video culture its due, but a Little X dvd? That's like opening a pack of Fleer Ultra basketball cards in the mid-90s and getting a gold plated Horace Grant.
nooo!!! I wanted to get those new titles. Goddamnit. Now I'm pissed at youtube.
I thought Gondry's & Jonze's each sold a million copies.... you'd think there'd be some business model w/ licensing that could make future releases possible.
grumble.
I got some other information when I reported on this a few months ago - link
Incidentally, MTV's traffic went down significantly in 2006. (The flash site went online around Oct 2006.) They haven't had numbers this low since approx. 2001. - link
I agree a Little X DVD may be over the top, but this is a collectors' series, after all, and he has enough good videos to fill a DVD.
Jonze's went "platinum", which is 100K units, the others' went "gold", or 50K, which was the report in 2005.
And I remember Michel saying in an interview that it took him a while to get paid for his DVD sales (and I still don't know if he ever did for sure).
"but a Little X dvd? That's like opening a pack of Fleer Ultra basketball cards in the mid-90s and getting a gold plated Horace Grant."
Jesus, spit. That was classic.
"It's a sad month for videos, first Res, now the Director's Label?"
You mean Res the festival and magazine? I'll be heartbroken if I lose it. I can't find any information on it "going under" anywhere else, can you send me a link?
