As far as i'm concerned, the hype surrounding Roman's music video work is exclusively due to the 7 letters of his last name. Couple of good ideas here and there, but really nothing to write home about.

i agree. he definitely has his own style that carries through in his videos and commercials, but it never amounts to anything that great.

Antville = buzzkill central. Roman does great vids. Directors can't all be Spike. Where did Spike go anyway? Have the monsters got 'im?

"Nothing to write home about?", "Never amounts to anything that great?" By what standard are we measuring music videos these days?

I think one of Roman's strengths is that he's not afraid to take a half-assed idea and run with it. He'll take a concept that logically shouldn't be a good idea and then attack it with all of his enthusiasm and come out with something great. See: Revolution 909 or Funky Squaredance. Sometimes the joke of the video is that you can't believe somebody had the balls to actually make that idea into a video.

i think the conceptual ideas behind videos are just as, if not more important than the techincal aspects of a given video. i don't find Roman's concepts to be at all enthralling. this is of course excluding videos wholly devoted to visual techniques (but i tend to not like those kind of videos to begin with). this is just based on my personal taste... i don't in any way think of Roman as being a bad director btw

OTC - i totally agree. I do enjoy the ones where you come out thinking 'i can't believe he sold that idea'. Like the Mansun one, or the Supergrass, or Daft Punk. But i find it usually not that great when he tries his hand at a performance video like here, or Phoenix 'everything is everything'. I guess you could say he's the Marcel Duchamp of music videos.
