LA Film Festival: The Canon of Patrick Daughters
"Or perhaps your life is just an idea somebody had for someone else’s life first, but you just happened to be next in line."
- What a classy closing line by SRO folks that ultimately has nothing to do with daughters or music videos in general.
The piece is about what Patrick Daughters' body of work is trying to say. The hypothesis is that it's a message about the ugly/beatiful truth underlying what is presented on the surface of things. The last line begs the question of whether his conceptual process, sometimes using an inspirational idea he got from one song on an entirely different song (mentioned early in the write-up), communicates his ideas on humanity far better than the videos he puts together.
It loses all the magic when I spell it out like that, but there you go. Next time I'll put a snarky one-liner under a YouTube video so I can be one of the cool blogging kids again.
if i'm not mistaken, lusk actually intended that as a compliment.
SRO: Progosk is right! And you know, you might think that the final line "begs to question his ideas on humanity" but guys, he makes performance videos. Not humanity statements.
Aside from really milking the world of daughters, at best all your piece can do is dig and "beg" for something more.
And then there's that final line. Just class. And way beyond the hightened words that came before.
Well, if it was compliment then I misunderstood so thanks. It just seemed like you were totally "dissing" me there at the end. The last line, and the article that preceded it, weren't meant as disconnected throwaways.
Perhaps I'm stretching things a bit, but after sitting through 90 minutes of Daughters videos after his introduction one definitely begins to see the world view that is underlying his work. Especially the early student films that were shown... one of them in particular was beyond fucked up (content wise) and you can see the themes pervasive even in what seem like simple performance peices. But you are right, at best I can only attempt to understand Daughters, but like I said: he had to leave so I couldn't delve deeper with questioning. Seems to be a stand-up chap, though.
Yeah, I saw those shorts while daughters was at nyu. Shawn Kim had Dp'd them. And I agree, there's more in those 2 pieces than his entire body of mv work.
