MAE "Sometimes I Can't Make it Alone" directed by PanOptic
This is an all greenscreen video we just finished for a band called MAE. The trippy color effects were done in collaboration with British artist Chris Parks, who did a lot of the VFX for The Fountain.
All of the following is just my opinion. Nothing more, nothing less...
First the good:
- Some of the lighting looks nice
- The casting seems decent
- Some of the CG backgrounds are cool in that very CG looking way
Now, the stuff I wasn't keen on:
- The video doesn't have up and down moments, it's stays, for it's entirety, at one level and one level only.
- After 20 seconds of watching I've seen everything you'll show me for the rest of the video and that's no fun.
- Don't know what you shot on (plus I'm watching this on a youtube stream) but the live action stuff looks very video-ish.
- The story, theme, vibe, seems very mashed together and isn't particularly clear or even interesting.
- The camera movement feels largely unmotivated and comes off as just movement for movement's sake.
- The band performance shots are pretty bland and (although it hurts me to sound so 'label') I feel as if I need to see more of the singer (all I could tell you about him a scant 2 minutes after watching the vid is that he's white and that I think he has brown hair). 7)The effects feel overdone in the video. I don't have the opportunity to appreciate any of them because they are constant.
What kind of budget did you have? I bet that considering the budget you accomplished a lot and for that you should be proud. However, I'll be honest with you and say that as a casual viewer who has no idea of what difficulties you faced in production I didn't really enjoy the video and the song is one of the worst I've heard in a long time.
i recall this track going out with around a 40k budget. i agree with kalstark's notes.
