VBS.tv's Patrick O'Dell gives us a taste of Spike Jonze (who is the VBS creative director). Skateboarding video with an abstract circular narrative.

Person Pitch, Panda Bear's album, is one of my favorites of the year. I wasn't expecting anything like this as a video.

yeah skateboarding is awesome. not sure this video is tho... what point? where narrative? where style? how different from just randomly cutting some skateboarding footage to any tune?

         

Not sure I like it either, but to answer your questions:

Point/narrative: Goes from the water back to the water. See "Abstract circular narrative".

Style: What you see is what you get. There are some interesting techniques in here, but most of it was pioneered by Jonze.

How is it different: Well, it's NOT randomly cut skateboarding footage. It's skateboarding footage shot specifically for this video.

One the best video i saw this year for one of the best songs from the best record i've heard (so far) in 2007. «Bros» is a superior song, but its video was sheer crap.

         

i think alot of the praise is coming straight from the hype around Panda Bear and not for this video itself. there's nothing here that hasn't been done by hundreds of skateboard videographers-- aside from the bookends. To top it off the skateboarder isn't even that good...get a copy of 411 Vid Mag and set it to Panda Bear--it'll be alot more exciting.

piore's on the money - it's a great tune, but not great footage... really unless you're going to do more creatively with an idea like this, it needs to be really great shooting or really great skateboarding to stand out... this ain't either.

yep i get the point about 'abstract circular narrative' - personally doesn't cut the mustard for me - bookends do not a narrative make.

but again, very nice tune.

         

those who have watched john from cincinnati will know what i mean when i say that i always pictured the season finale sequence cut against this song. this video is a bit strange for my taste, but it definitely fits the surf/skate/brian wilson on lsd vibe.
