Black Kids "I'm Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You (unofficial video)" Dir: Luis Gonzalez
Black Kids are unsigned, so I made a video for their rump shaker, "I'm Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You". Other credits. Cameraman: Jimmy Nicks.
If you don't know who Black Kids are yet, check Village Voice, NY Times, SPIN.COM or Pitchfork Media.

Great take on Black Kids courtesy of Idolator: [ ARTICLE LINK ]
I don't think that article is a great take. Reggie & Kevin have been in music as long as I've known them (about 15 years). Both have been signed to a small label and drawn crowds before (I know because I photographed them back in the day & saw their video randomly on TV). That was a different band, yet Reggie displayed the same musical genius. I don't know Owen, Ali or Dawn, but my brother knows the girls, and I think they play fine. Sure they've been overhyped, but on the other hand, you can't really be overhyped. Bad press is better than no press. Not everybody will like them. I'm posting as a friend & fan, not a random person who heard of them through a blog. And all I can say is I'm glad people blog about them. I haven't heard anything bad about them yet from the strangers I've met who read about them online. To each their own.
"you can't really be overhyped"
When your ability to pull it off live comes nowhere near your ability to put it on tape (or drive), you are treading on dangerous ground.
The article is interesting, and makes valid points that are applicable to any number of bands. The problem is that people are so intent on the next big thing, or big upping their palz, that they lose sight of where the band in question is really at. Realistically. Today.
Your own tag-line says it all: "If you don't know who Black Kids are yet, check Village Voice, NY Times, SPIN.COM or Pitchfork Media." It's like, "you mean, you don't know? Obviously you aren't reading the right blogs."
I've worked with bands who have suffered the same fate. Better to toil in relative obscurity as you work out the kinks, than to face the brutally unkind spotlight from day one. We'll see what happens. The bets are on. ;)
