Nice to see a video from south East Asia popping up on the board I would love to see more of this. I can personally vouch that Indonesia has a thriving underground music industry with video potential and I’m sure Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and the rest of the region in general has its own particular flavors to offer.
Nice video Appropriately low fi nothing more needed, do the articles in the papers in the background have any significance.?
Huh? vidbot with warped opinion yet again. really really boring.
To put it in your words... "Im sure the six year olds are loving it, all that craft!"
looks familiar doesn't it... videos.antville.org
I think ur being unduly over harsh on vidbot there parmezan! He's right, it is hard to find reasonable dope from the geographic locations he's stated! Believe me I do many a trawl for SEApop I usually end up only finding cheesy stuff like this Pi ca so - Xu han.wmv not so hot!
Any link that opens up a portal to South East Asian scene is to be applauded I'd say! U could'a turned the motiofixo url page and got Ahli Fiqir - 2x5 (Yeah I know its already on the 'ville, but as a crappy u2b)
Fair enuff you don't think the Bittersweet clip is of exacting standards, still that could apply to 95% of the clips posted on here!
robodrug: blame europe for that one.
don't u think it's a bit of a rip off of that rapture video? or that datsuns video that ripped off that rapture video? well... I can personally vouch that south east asia has a thriving underground music scene as well, too bad the videos are all still.pretty.shit.
Sorry guys that clip was only meant to show what a trawl tru SEA urls throws up! It was the first Vietnamese language file I came across t'day! Dain't have time to plough thu them to find the just as awful 'costumed traditional folk pop cross' clips which I was hoping for Personally I don't mind Asian artists recycling western music, (coz thats what turn this here discourse has taken, rather than the video storyboard) to me its a bit like the way reggae reuses rydim sections, or other genera sample music! Jpop and Kpop have being doing it for years I'm sure their industries must have started out just as cheesy! As Picasso (the real one) said 'all art is theft'
Yes it is derivative and familiar what do you expect after hundreds of years of colonialism? and yes it is obviously takes influence from Shynolas Rapture clip and I bet I could find ten more from western countries that do as well. My point is we rarely if ever see videos on this board from this part of the world and if so I don’t think they are done to this level or they are pop shite. It’s a perfectly acceptable video it does what it sets out to achieve and doesn’t wear the borrowed style like a badge of honor. Some of the other work on the production companies reel is pretty bloody good in my opinion and I am sure given time budget and encouragement they could do allot more that could compete with videos from western clip makers.
Most of what people would see from Asia is your J and Canto pop which is the driving force of most of the music industry over there. But as with anywhere there are pockets of resistance and proudly guarded scenes and subcultures. Indonesia’s punks are some of the most political active and hardcore guys you will ever meet. I know guys who regularly butt heads with a very hostile police force over there and have the scars to prove it. They don’t need videos to promote themselves because they are grassroots and in touch with their fan base day to day. But if you could ever get these guys on camera for a performance video or even film one of their shows you would see far more devotion and intensity than most of the so called punks in first world countries.
Ok so I am starting to waffle a bit but what I am trying to say is its to easy to write off Asia as a domain of Engrish, Corruption, and cultural theft on a grand scale however they have masses of relevant contempory culture its just most of the time the wrong people are in control of the media and you never see it.
vidbot, What are trying to say? that asians are "understandably" culturally dictated by the west? That they can't help themselves but to rip off the cultural output of american/european media producers ? Well, Being asian myself, I find that offensive on several levels, maybe you should do your own research and find out more asian videos that don't rip off Shynola. if you didn't realize, some of the most recognized and original video makers in the world like Nagi Noda come from that part of the world. And yes, you are starting to waffle on a bit, I'd like to judge videos on their own merits, not where they come from. A discussion about the underground music scene in asia would be appropriate in another time and place, this is a music video forum the last time I checked.
robodrug: fair enough. does this illustrate your point? (via musicthing.co.uk)
On the right track eeeel, still let me give a precise example! I come across a board like this? As I haven't a clue about the language translation I have to take pot luck when doing the trawl and more often than not come up with stuff like this Ding dong- Bich Hanh Mind u I should have known with that link Ding dong! Chuh!
Fascinating stuff I'm sure from the aspect of a western commercial cultural norm and its dominating global integration (cultural imperialism some might say) but hardly the stuff I'm looking for!
The pop/folk cross I stated as an example earlier might actually be Indonesian but since I apparently have deleted the bookmark I can no longer vouchsafe such
