Friendly Fires "Paris" (Dir: Price James)

I think this is one of those videos that will kick off the whole "unimaginative use of high speed cameras debate" again. That said the shot of the balloon hitting the drum is amazing I just wish we had more, more, more of that kind of thing. The one hitting the lead singer doesn’t have quite the same impact but is interesting nonetheless.

I think this is a solid video even though there doesn’t seem to be any reason for the high-speed stuff. Infact if you cut it out I actually think the whole thing would benefit because the rhythm suffers when we cut from real time band to those slooooow shots where we know exactly what is going to happen.

At the very least there seems to be more of a gentle touch to the use of high-speed here unlike other clip makers who anchor the whole clip around it to the detriment of the song.

update

I just watched the rest of this director’s work on Black dog and I think more of it should be posted here. The clip for “lost penguin” is unreal!

quizmaster, December 11, 2007 at 9:22:45 AM CET

This video is terrible! everyone is aware that you can buy slow motion footage of a water balloon bursting on pretty much any slow motion stock footage site. 'Gentle touch my ass!'... its more of a bludgeoning by foot long dildo. Vidbot if you were to take out the slowmotion stuff there would be nothing of interest with this video. Also i did enjoy the 'lost penguin' video but how many times have we seen that effect before and the rest of the videos on this directors site are average at best... I wont even go into my contempt for the art direction. Vidbot, I am a little concerned with your reasoning... didn't you just write a whole essay on the wrongs of stealing ideas and unoriginality vs originality. Infact i am a little bewildered as to why you would go to such lengths to write off moyes' videos and then be so lightweight with this clip. I mean i agreed with you to a certain degree on the moyes comments but shit 'my people' is way better then this video. This incongruity in commenting has led me to the following selection of conclusions: a) you actually are Price James. b) you really want to direct a video for modular. d) you are doing too many drugs e) you are a frustrated director f) you are really old... (past your prime)

What the fuck was that? What a mess. I feel ill. Stock slow mo footage intercut with shitty performance video. Solid vidbot? More like a sloppy burger scooped from the gutter.

quizmaster, December 13, 2007 at 12:30:49 AM CET

No i am not related to parmezan.

Whats wrong? Could it be that differing opinions are upsetting your security blanket of mediocrity?

Ok so you imagine me as a toad then this is how i imagine you.

What i imagine, shatner, is that your a little old man in a quaint wooden cottage in the middle of nowhere hovelled under a nice wool knit blanket, sipping tea. Your little bifocles are almost falling off your nose as you hunch over your little computer marveling over the wonder of every music video you see on antville. You see when you were young music videos hadnt even been invented yet, you spent your time making silent films.

Every one is allowed to their own opinions. If you think this video deserves an achievement award then thats your opinion but it means we would probably have nothing to talk to each other about if we met on the street. And thats fair enough. Thats why its an internet forum and not a social get together. I for one would prefer it if i saw more people sharing their opinions good or bad with reasoning for either rather then the conglomerate of shallow 'wow, that was amazing, did you use a camera for that!' comments. I wouldn't usually bother replying to such shallow mindedness but self important idiots like you piss me off.

May i suggest communism as a better past time for you.

I'm sorry shatner if it breaks up the rub n tug video backpatting session you had going on here. Antville is a forum for discussion, not just a warm fuzzy place you get to go to if you make a music video.

How am I being a dickhead about anything? I voice my opinion like everyone else here, what's the problem if it's not the usual ball fondling you like to read?

Maybe it's you that needs to go to Youtube, where clueless peasants can comment on the amazing new technology advancement that is music video.

shatner, December 14, 2007 at 11:45:40 AM CET

If you think that what you are both doing is called 'discussion' then you are both dillusional. You are both filled with far too much hate for the medium and the guys who make the videos for my liking. You get personal about the video-makers and make offhand, offensive comments about their work. Don't try and pretend that you are giving a balanced, well thought out opinion on these videos. I don't think you think that. You get the same kick out of kicking these directors as simon cowell gets out of telling a teenager they are shit at singing.

What's more, you both clearly haven't been within 100 miles of a video set for a very long time and are fustrated film geeks squatting behind a computer. You both, seemingly, have no idea about how music videos are commissioned and created, and your comments reflect this.

I'm not going to waste my time trying to enter into a dialogue with you, because only a fool argues with a fool.

quizmaster, December 15, 2007 at 2:39:37 AM CET

oh shutup shatner... your sounding like that senile old man again. U know nothing of what i do... and for all anybody knows on this site your the frustrated film geek. What i do know is that your comments are lame, predictable (especially that last one) and that you are easily impressed by pretty much any video. This says to me that if you actually do make music videos, commercials or films they would reflect this boring predictability and uneducated, senile taste. I do however agree with you on one thing. That you really shouldn't waste your time trying to enter into a dialogue with me because you obviously don't seem to have the education or imagination to.

parmezan, December 15, 2007 at 9:42:36 AM CET

Very daring call on my apparent "no idea about how music videos are commissioned and created"... I think you are quite naive.

I have rarely heard you say anything of any use to these forums beyond useless back patting.

I welcome shatner, (or anyone else for that matter) to make a credible case for why videos like this are worth applauding.
