LCD Sound System - Big Ideas - Ace Norton

Eh
Jesus Christ. I jumped out of my seat when blue wig face paint girl popped up.
Interesting vid. He must have known people were going to call it Around The World Redux, right?
brother superior jumped the shark.
Norton sucks. Such a cheap try...
10k.
Boffo, Ace. For the budget, this is a homerun in my book, but people probably hate me too so maybe my opinion doesn't hold weight in the antville court. The Around the World-ness as well as the homage to the LCD vid that Garth Jennings did, are pretty out in the open. In the end it's a visual feast that's arty and fun . What more could you ask for.
Captainboob, what video of Ace's do you think this is a remake of?
i think it would have helped if things got a bit more wackier.
i was referring to around the world.
they are both one shot, and reveal each new addition in a slow camera move.
they both have different costumes for each group of new people
that interact with a different sound element
and obviously it's not just me, everybody else here has noticed that too. One should wait until nobody remembers a video to remake it, otherwise it's a little bit lame.
Awesome.
Fits the spirit of the music wonderfully.
Lots of bang for little buck.
Captainboob, you must have seen a different video of Around the World. By my watch, Around the World cuts in six seconds and then continues to cut for the rest of the video. Of course this video is a reference. You didn't decode anything that isn't there.
well perhaps i should have watched it again. in my memory it looks exactly like this ace norton video, that's all i'm saying. it's still got the feel of long takes and slow camera moves
Is this a b-side from Sounds of Silver? Or something new? -j

It's less a lame remake and more of a tongue in cheek meta-video, at least in terms of LCD Sound System's past work. It references Daft Punk's "Around the World" which was itself referenced in the LCD video "Daft Punk is Playing at My House" and visually remixes it with a reference to the one shot dolly reveal from LCD's "All My Friends." It's an Andy Warhol fever dream of a black-hole pop culture and it's a great use of a 10k budget. Yes, I sound like a film-school asshole, but none the less I think it's true and that it's brilliant for it.
The idea which as has been said is an amalgamation of other contemporary directors work is achieved well and the video appears solid. It is well executed technically. But where "Around the World" had style the art direction here is tiered and obvious. I thought as I watched it that it may get away with some sort of 50's fancy dress clique but no its like Ace is really well connected in some sort of lobotimised scenester community which only sees a reflection of itself when it looks around. I dont know this feels like an idea that you think is worth doing just after you've smoked a joint.
It's in the spirit of "Around the World", but it's hardly a remake. "Rain Down Love" was a straight-up remake.
Nonetheless, I love this video. When the blue girl popped up, I'm like "FUCK YEAH THIS IS AWESOME!"
Ace Norton is win.
Sorry, Captainboobies. I thought you had said that he was remaking one of his own videos. I just learned to read this week, so I'm a little rusty.
I second what R-dogg sez. Brother Superior jumped the shark, and delivered an Andy Warhol fever dream to its sharky little head.
The video really won me over when the girl pops up.
And don't forget that there's a bit of Kenneth Anger in the beginning, which I suppose fits in with the Warhol analogy.
I love how videos that people hate on antville start the most blowhardy film nerd discussions. I love it!
i kind of agree with r-dogg. At first i was like whoa! this is a cheap 'around the world' rip off but then when the girls makeup and visible tracking of the 'all my friends' video became apparent i thought hmm perhaps this is some sort of cheap post modern lcd soundsystem self parody. I then pondered some of ace nortons previous work and thought of the hustler video which reminded me of a cheap version of chris cunninghams 'windowlicker' and then thought of the bloc party video which reminds me of spike jonze's Hummer TVC. Ace Norton seems to have some sort of cheap, sloppy and naive style going on which he seems to pull off half of the time and half of the time it makes me cringe. I dont mind this recent video but what i am wondering is whether he actually is consciously parodying his peers in a post modern sort of way or is simply just skimming the surface of recent popular culture for influences.
Ace Norton back to his best. Great effort
acenorton.com is 404 error. New link please?
i really want to watch the video. has anyone downloaded it, since the link is dead? could someone upload the .MOV to some webspace like sendspace or mediafire?
new link: acenorton.com
note that it's labeled secret... let's just keep this one between me and you.
GO GONDRY GO!!!! at leat it could be better executed
This video is fine fun. It obviously has predecessors, but so what? Yay for light up floors!
I will say that this concept is a 'cool homage' or a 'lazy rip-off' depending on your perspective. You can see that varying perspective in the comments above.
It does make me take note that homage or genre clips like this, but with urban artists and visual touchstones outside the art school canon are almost always cast into the "lazy" category here on on the 'Ville.
Yes We Can.
Is this like a 'be kind rewind' remake thing?

jbean: I believe the word you're looking for is 'Sweeded' 'Sweded'
fixed that for ya.
I don't think Ace totally sucks. There are many people out there making far worse videos, but who needs to discuss those. It's because he has talent, and gets high profile videos, and puts lots of time and energy into them, and end up being very derrivitive of something else made recently. more so than with other people. but I think he's getting better over time and I dont mean to be one of these hateful guys on here who just spews negativity. I for one, at least always enjoy watching one of his new videos, even if i do end up a little dissapointed. But how about that new animated light video at the top of antville right now? once again, how can somebody still do that? even though it is well done and probably took a lot of time,
