Kanye West "Homecoming" : Dir. Hype Williams

here's what's odd:
-
Chris Martin sings "Do you remember fireworks at Lake Michigan" when it's safe to assume he's never been in Chicago for 4th of July.
-
A song about Chicago nostalgia; presumably centered around Kanye growing up in the city as a child - and they spend an inordinate amount of time at a scuplture (the bean) which was built in the last 6 years.
...methinks it is just a photo study of his home town. not a notalgia thing. I am sure when any of us go o our home town we can stll say "wow..things shuuure have changed....hyuk, hyuk."
i like the song more now.
and that always gets a good job grade in my opinion.
Pacy, vivid, appropriate, flows along very nicely. Despite Hype Williams having been around for a million years he can still show younger clip makers how to put it all together so bits don't stick out.
Against the desire to fight it, I have gained greater appreciation for Kanye's ability to make pop. The mood is right for the track visually. The grittier B&W stock is nice. The "people mattes" not so great. Makes me think of ipod ads beaten to death or more appropriately the great 60's poster designs in the vein of Brownjohn's work. The moving about NYC atop a flatbed in B&W does remind me of Bjork's "Big Time Sensuality" too much to enjoy it. Am I missing something with the mirrors behind him?
Catchy - nice in b&w. Although, having been filmed in that enormous mirrored casing it could now be said that Kanye West is a giant cupcake. And 'thanks' Common for standing in the middle of it all a couple of times!
Nice B&W especially on Chris Martin and some low-angle shots are interesting on Kanye in the Anish Kapoor "clouds gate"... but the "i-pod ad" effects = :-(
yeah the common parts are so funny... its like they shot 10 seconds of common standing in a room...
i actually kinda like the people mattes....
they look cool.
did ipod commercials kill any sort of silhouette in filmmaking? i hope not...
Great Videos coming from a Great Album. I just hope that Hype can stop this prejudice of only giving Kanye good "Hype Williams" videos.
