Kanye West, "Flashing Lights" (dir. Martin de Thurah)
Third time's a charm?
"i know he did it" Talking about jonzie perhaps?
I'm not sure what's the purpose of the house + dinner? visual gimmick? if it serves the narrative side of the video, i missed it completely. The jonze version really simply nailed the spirit of the song.
I'm glad this version is finally getting out as kanye has withheld it for some time.
It doesn't fully work with the song, but is interesting nonetheless. Dethurah is still way ahead of the pack.
Dethurah's style is certainly there, but not one of his best works so far, in my humble opinion. Still the best out of the three. I guess too much sand for Mr. West's truck.
Why was it with-held?
Did Yezze not like the steezy?
Or was he trying to get the most out of promotional dollars / timing?
Lush like a Rembrandt... but don't see the connects
That was terrible! Soooo pretentious! Why does he try so hard (and not in a good way)? He needs to make a 5th cuz all the videos for "Flashing Lights" pretty much sucked. The only good thing about the "Official" music video release was Rita G's giggling chimmy-chungas. If you know what I mean.
Kanye responds (as per his blog):
I DIDN'T RELEASE THE OTHER FLASHING LIGHTS VIDEOS!!! PEOPLE LEAKED THEM. 05.29.2008
I shot 3 vids for flashing lights cuz I ain't like the first 2. I loved the 3rd one that I released with Spike and hit the world with that. I actually had Sam Speigal , Spike's brother and co-orchestrater of THE TOUR MUSIC, do a remix 2 the scary one 2 make the music fit. I planned 2 put it on a DVD later this year. No rant's here just an explanation of why yall getting those other vids rt now that I ain't approve and why I ain't finna post neither on my blog. So I hope whoever leaked them got the shine they was looking 4 cause that's all they'll get now. And I know that's incorrect english but that's how I talk when I want 2. Oh and I've just been 2 busy 2 get at the New York Times for all that his Ego BLAH BLAH BLAH bullshit so stay tuned. For fun, I want yall 2 read this whole post in the Grandma's Boy JP robot voice LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Respect though, to Kanye for not giving up on finding the best visual representation for his song, without his ego and tenacity we wouldn't have had the amazing version that Spike did.
NOT THAT MANY ARTISTS OUT THERE THAT CARE THIS MUCH ABOUT THEIR VIDEOS?
i love de thurah as much as the next guy, but this video is just empty (considering the context of the song).
spike's is definitely the strongest video of the bunch, and as any good clip should make someone feel, i can't imagine another visual representation of the song.
very glad kanye issued that "statement".
pretentious pretty much sums it up. Not a good match-up. I don't want to say the unthinkable but.... has de Thurah run out of steam? I liked his two Carpark North videos, didn't like Royksopp, didn't like this.
and wtf, when did Kanye turn into a 12-year-old girl? OMG LOL.
And Grandma's Boy???.... man sometimes I don't understand hip-hop.
God bless Kanye.
Its cool that Kanye finds non-hiphop directors to do his videos, and Martin is a great director, but the bottom line is Kanye sucks, he's like a contemporary Skee-lo. Cool sneakers and a ego dont make a good MC. I think he should return to producing, oh and his live show is insanely over rated.
Is the concept of this video Kayne being in a game of "Clue"? I say this is the best shot of the three, but like everyone else says, this video feels out of place and doesnt connect with the song.
I don't get it what the big deal behind all those videos.
I mean. If i'm Spike jonze... and Kanye West shoot three other videos... i would not do the job. o am i wrong?
doing a second or third video... is just wrong. it's boring. it's like: oh, this video don't work in the US, or in europe, we have to make another one.
It's not about art or filmmaking. it's about ego and money. and thats sucks.
it's not that difficult to grasp, luk. especially considering that it's happened before to k west, with no less than michel gondry on heard'em say. once it was finished, k realised it didn't live up to what he (and everyone else, presumably) was expecting, so he commissioned a new video (bill plympton's).
it's easy to imagine how the challenge for jonze, to capture what two other directors hadn't captured, would have been compelling. what's unusual is just that k gives enough of a shit to recommission videos.
feel this is one of the best video ever made for a hip hop track unexpected, it's the kind of video which makes this genre still interesting. martin de thurah is a genius and his images are more striking than all we are used to watching everyday.
