Jem- It's Amazing (Directed by Saam Gabbay and Jem)
Made entirely from 25,632 photographs.

I appreciate the effort. 25,632 photographs is a lot of work. But my only hunch is why go through the trouble when the equivalent could be achieved merging multiple video planes of the clips? the flipbook effect could be achieved this way, with live action. Just add a simple (multiply) expression in after effects and voala! you got it.
Nice vid, I appreciate all the hard work.
^ I would imagine they used photos because you can achieve a higher resolution/better image than with video. (Unless they shot RED) And it also helps with lighting issues.
But damn that is a lot of work.
No, it's not.
it's absolutely true, a "similar" effect can be gained using expressions in AE. However, it's not quite the same. The most important difference is that the Jem video was shot with an 85mm 1.2 canon lens and the depth of field is quite shallow. As well, file sizes were beyond HD and there may be an HD version in the works (though that would mean cropping the 3:2 image to 16:9). Also, the video camera would have a delay in rolling/stopping and a myriad other reasons. So yes, it is similarly possible but it just doesn't look or feel the same. The best example of this is in the film called "A Very Sad Day."
I think the apparatus one holds makes a big difference in the end result.
