tacky.. 'free online greeting cards' aesthetics..

I sort of loved Speed Racer. And I thought Matrix Revolutions was sort of awesome. Reloaded was okay, and Matrix 1 is classic. So - I guess I kind of really like the work of Wachowskis?

I guess I look at this as the Wachowskis experimenting in music videos; doing stuff that they wouldn't do for a feature. I'm almost assuming that the Bros. contacted Antony & the Johnsons; I find it hard to believe that they would be sent a track for what must have been a 20-30K budget (and I'm assuming they pulled some favors here).

at times it almost seems like a parody of itself it's so silly/serious. the butterflies out of the mouth? the epilepsy beginning? the awful speed racer transitions? there was no need for greenscreen at all, really; it wasn't implemented well once.

and isn't the pc term "wachowski siblings" now?

Label blurb from pitchfork, which makes it sound like they executive produced more than directed.

"Antony asked his friends the Wachowski Brothers to work with him on a video for his new single 'Epilepsy Is Dancing'. They in turn invited painters Tino Rodriguez and Virgo Paradiso to create costumes and a mystical environment and choreographer Sean Dorsey and his dancers to bring the dream sequence to life. Antony's artistic partner Johanna Constantine stars as herself in the role of 'Deer Monster'. The video was lit and shot by the up-and-coming directors of photography, Chris Blasingame and Banker White, and produced by Jim Jerome. The production team collectively named themselves AFAS. Please enjoy the fruits of their San Francisco art party."

winchandpulley, January 21, 2009 at 2:50:29 AM CET

This has to do with their whole sex change thing, yes? So so so strange.

najork, January 21, 2009 at 5:19:49 AM CET

No winch, it doesn't have to do with that.

winchandpulley, January 21, 2009 at 5:50:03 AM CET

Sorry Najork, for perpetuating the mistruth.

I looked into it and it looks like the sex change thing was a rumor, but Larry Wachowski is still a cross dresser, yes? Which is how he's friends with Antony, I imagine. It stands to reason that trannies of a feather flock together.

The video's decent, I guess. Very Kenneth Anger meets Ray Tintori. Makes me a little sore that they took the job from some young, talented, undiscovered chubby potentially transvestite director, but what can ya do?

you still consider yourself undiscovered josh?

Normally I'm all for the 'more is more' / grit and sequins aesthetic but... wow. Just... no. Not one single aspect of that video is acceptable. Bad cinematography, bad lighting, bad choreography, horrific yet utterly non-ironic use of greenscreen... No.

Since Speed Racer came out I've been waiting that weird Big Head Transition Style to become abused, luckily this hasn't happened yet. But this video has so many good/bad aspects that.... well. I liked the deer touch at the end.

najork, January 22, 2009 at 12:03:12 AM CET

Winch, I just mean to say it isn't like their interests suddenly shifted at some point. The Bros' 1st film back in 1996 was Bound, which screened at allot of Gay & Lesbian film festivals.

Antony's music was pretty prominent in V for Vendetta, so they go back at least a few years.

As for this video, it's lost on me despite fleeting moments were the art direction gels. Seems too shaky and abstracted to convey much.

(oh deer...)

winchandpulley, January 22, 2009 at 1:30:22 AM CET

Gotcha. That all makes sense. Never saw Bound. Was just trying to connect the dots between being sci-fi action guys to sensitive dancy stuff.

And yes, I believe my talents as a crossdresser have yet to be fully appreciated. But I think my memoirs "Angora Nights" should clear all that up.
