Kanye West - Amazing (Dir: Hype Williams)
includes BET interview
Hype's best video since the last Kanye video he did lol. Seriously though, this is my favorite song on the album, so I had high hopes for the video. The Helicopter shots had been done in previous Hype videos, but the change from letterbox to Full Frame increased the "Amazing"ness of the video. Reminded of when I saw The Dark Knight in IMAX.
I also like how there isnt too many cuts in the video so you can really take in all the landscape. While this is a Kanye video, this is a great Hawaii tourism commercial, and I mean that in the best possible way.
erm, what? (1 thing fo sho: he's on a boat.)
golf claps
meehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. like, could that be MORE unamazing?
auto tune, auto tune, auto tune - this is so heart-, soul und senseless. i don't like these machine-tracks, and the video has not one visual effect which i havent seen 1000 times before.
agree with true_fiction on all counts
I might be reading into the video too much, but you kinda appreciate the video more after you listen to the interview after the video. If you know the whole inspriation behind the whole album (Mom's death, Girl Leaving him, problems with industry), it makes sense that he shot the video in a place where he goes to get away from it all. The viewer is suppose to feel that same serenity. It's a good Kanye video, and he didn't have datamosh anything.
I also love this song on the album, but I have to say with a song title like "Amazing" it would be nice for Williams/West to attempt to make a video that matches the title of the song. Instead it's a very uninspired idea.
The wide shots are beautiful. But the change between 2:3:5 aspect ratio to full frame is so jarring.
What would have been amazing would be to shoot the entire thing with the camera they used for the helicopter shots. Give the performance part a HUGE feeling rather than just cut between boring close ups.
Fresh, great cinematography and color grade. Jais @ Bobine? Helicopter shots remind me how in The Shining they are full frame, and ou can see its shadows, lolz.
im down with this. nothing like seeing a man in a denim jacket rapping in a verdant junglescape!
The one thing Hype can do, almost better than anyone else, is make your artist look every inch the superstar.
K
I dig it.
the 2.35/1.33 change didn't really bother me. In theory I don't like the idea, but it worked just fine here.
