Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes (dir: Danny Perez)

second disappointing video from this album... although i came to kind of like the first one.. what was the budget for this around 2k ? Just switch off when the high point of the song comes in and so does either the mirror effect, the kaleidoscope effect and / or a composite layer effect. The art direction / costuming ice sculpture hinted at being interesting but went nowhere. oh well - great song at least.
yawn...
I think Animal Collective is pretty boring, so this video is a perfect fit.
I guess it may not have occurred to any of you previous posters that may be this particular artist's preferred mode of expression.
That being a favoring of simplicity & impression over the grandiose, so that the song is represented & enhance rather than being replaced by the video.
Perhaps they don't have or want even want to spend money on opulent visuals that don't really improve the truly important intention of there work.
Why do you feel compelled to deride material that you're already predisposed to not liking? Rather like fish in a barrel don't you think? Why don't you stick to discerning the relative worth of the newest Kanye video & arguing it's merits, because god knows we could all use more of that.
Art is NOT about budget, medium, or technique but the will to express an idea even if not fully realized.THIS is art & it's pure. An admirable endeavor in it's own rite & for some worth more in terms of inspiration & encouragement than all the polish, sheen, & "acceptable" standards money can buy.
Idle down grading is what makes this forum moot & tedious. It's not constructive & merely serves to further the indifference of would be contributors who might actually have something to say.
I agree that this may not be the most impressive work ever presented, but then again not everything HAS to be earth shattering. It fits nicely with the band's over all approach to music, one of minimalism & repetition to create an atmosphere. They are about effect & singularity over the complex or pre-formed. It succeeds on it's own level.
Incidentally, I'm not particularly a fan of this band but DO appreciate there approach to doing things.
In other words, GROW UP & if you have something to say please articulate something other than "this sucks."
:)
sorry, are we talking about art??? damn. I should be pretty stupid or confused then... oh, and by the way, it's high time for the world to forget about Animal collective, way overrated. In my opinion of course, that may only implie my small self.
I am more disappointed by the long winded defense of this video than the video itself. In my book, money or not this video fails as both art and film. This creative failure serves to cheapen my experience of this song and my perception of the band. Yes I am a fan of Animal Collective and their music inspires more for me visually and conceptually. If this video was given more money for such things as 'polish, sheen and acceptable standards that money can buy' it still would not have been any better. It is what it is.
P.S 'This is art & it's pure.' ??? What the fuck does this mean? If there is such a thing as 'pure' art than I have a much greater expectation for it. Actually my expectations for normal art are much higher let alone its 'pure' form.
hipgnosist,
I'd highly recommend deleting your post, it'll save you a lot of ridicule. On the other hand it could be a very effective critique if one reads it with Stephen Colbert's satirical voice in their head.
Bites this piece of video art and probably many others I can't be bothered to research.
I... wanted to like this. I like avant-garde video art. But this just came off as amateurish, like people aping actual artists' work for a music video.
"... I like avant-garde video art. But this just came off as amateurish, like people aping actual artists' work for a music video."
spot on, son.
Yeah, I should probably not drink & type anymore.
I still think that these guys simply prefer this type of low budget, singular approach as a stylistic preference & only meant that I can appreciate this approach on it's own merit. It IS amateur by definition, but that's not necessarily bad.
As for ridicule, who cares? The real point was about articulate argument on this site & how it can hinder dialog.
'This is art & it's pure.' = these guy's as a band & in there choice of attendant visual representation are straight out of sophomore art school. I appreciate the fact that they're unapologetic about this, "purity" was an admittedly loaded choice of words here & was meant to imply that it's more about a technique & effect than mastery. Just the will to express something or try it for it's own sake, not necessarily to convince the viewer of anything.
Whatever.
Rave On...
I love animal collective and like hipgnosist I understand why they take the approach that they take with their videos but the problem is that they are rarely any good.
this video in particular gets off on a kind of sloppy, cheap, hippy art school-ness which is the most annoying aspect of the band in my opinion. It's very predictable even... And no I didn't make it past the half way point...
I wonder how these last two animal collective videos have chosen to go "weird" because the music seems rather normal to me. A song about really hot summer days. An ambient noise that imitates an AC fan. Why does the video look like an anatomical science nightmare?
Perez is working with the band on a film. The video probably looks the way it does because that is what everyone involved (including the band) wanted. They have had similar dancers on stage with them live (see here).
This looks like Ace Norton's university video art re-released as a mundane "weird" music video.
I understand if the band don't want to look too fancy in terms of video releases, but this just becomes detrimental to their music.
I'll go ahead and say it: That new Cassie video is better "art" than this will ever be. Dead serious.
The involvement of a bunch of white hipster art school students doesn't automatically mean the end product will be art, by the way. When something sucks, it sucks.
