YES!

Later - Here we go again with the minimalist nay saying. (Below,...jeez)

Anyway, like this video. It's in the spirit of the others & a compliment to the material of the artist.

Plus, turned me on to still another talented director I'll look for in the future.

Good Job!

Doesn't have nearly as much atmosphere as it thinks it does. And all I could focus on was how rough/broken out her skin looked in that white pan-cake makeup.

I enjoyed this.

Did I really just watch 4 min of house lamps strobing off and on? what a shame.

Sorry but is hipgnosist semi retarded? All of his/her comments basically are along the lines of: 'Wow! a music video.... Amazing!' Apologies hipgnosist but this video so obviously fails that even the most undiscerning of hipsters would have to question it a little bit.

PS hypgnosist interesting to see that you amended your above comment. Now you look more intellectual!

Kansas -

"There'll be peace when you are gone."

Isn't that handle a little corny? Get it,KANSAS...corn. See, they GROW corn in Kansas. That's why that's funny.

Have you checked out that new Lilly Allen video?

But seriously, please refrain from personal jabs. I don't see you describing why or how exactly this fails or setting forth exactly what the seemingly universal criteria for success is. That's called debate & it has rules & etiquette.

This is moving images & music, by definition it's a music video. Someone succeeded in creating a music video. The rest is conjecture, the point of this site.

You have always seemed to be more interested in the opinions of others & crosstalk on this forum. I on the other hand APPRECIATE MUSIC VIDEO as a form in general. WANT to like them. LIKE it when people try to do something, if even flawed. THAT, doesn't bother me. The intention is the thing.

Furthermore, was simply commenting on a few videos that no one else had bothered to say ANYTHING about, it's called support & encouragement. Positivity. Another, seemingly often lost facet here.

I save my dissertations for the more refined & articulate such as yourself, where it can be fully considered in it's magnitude & gravity.

Generally, if I don't like it...well then there's really nothing to say. Sometimes, but as a rule... there's plenty of that on this site too. But I really try not to attack other users personally. I mean are we 12 or what?

As for this one in particular, like the Animal Collective clip from last week, the REAL argument is whether or not ultra-minimalism is acceptable or worthy somehow.

It seems to bug a lot of people here or come off as slip shot. Understandable as there are some fine & skilled people on this site who might find this approach lacking certain graces or skill compared to their own hard efforts. I actually find it refreshing in many cases & yes, even inspiring. It makes sense in the age of nil-budgets, sensory overload, & general lack of new ideas. When done properly it's an effective use of resource & spares the gluttonous feeling of so many other "better" looking videos that are forgotten in the same amount of time.

Lastly could it be worth considering that, whether conscious or not, the rise of more & more animation, super hot primary tones, & basically simplified compositions might have as much to do with the destination medium I.E. smaller screens such as blog posting & now even phones? Not to mention the types of environments one might see these things like sitting on a train, waiting in line or in a sub menu at work? These are environments where many people simply CANNOT concentrate on things, even if they have the will. Frankly they play better visually on the smallest screens than something with higher resolution or compositional detail might as there is less information to be lost through re-transmission or low bandwidth, & in general don't require as much from the viewer mentally which I think we can all agree is a sad preference for most of western civ. in any number of ways. Hence, possibly making these types of videos potentially just as if not more effective than other creative choices. Could this be a method or "movement" if you will. Might there be some conscious or intentional element of thought beyond budgets or technical limitations. Could it be related to classic Scandinavian design perhaps? In spite of any lofty aspirations, at some level 99.9 of these are advertisements on the most fundamental of levels after all. Let's not forget what kind of disposable bastardized mutant spawn we're talking about here. Or is any of THAT too "retarded" to even ponder for a second?

I'm sure being a working professional or at least a clearly more astute observer of the medium than I, you must have some farther reaching grasp of such things an myself.

Please, feel free to enlighten us all. I'm obviously missing the point somewhere & cower in the shadow of your terse scrutiny compared to my fundamental & tenuous grasp of the most primary of communication skills, let alone something as complex & sophisticated as putting images to music or using one of them there tricky boxes to get that little teeny spirit guy to dance on electric camp fire radio thing in my room...

I want to know what YOU think. Who the FUCK are YOU anyway?

Are you're the guy that played tambourine? I'll bet you were. I mean harmony vocals & tambourine, oh yeah & the ever popular staple of rock music VIOLIN.

What kind of resume is that, really?

Left Overture was your last good record. Think about THAT, LEFT OVERTURE.

Get it? It's a 35 yr. old pun for god's sake. See the band KANSAS they had this record. It was called LEFT OVERTURE. You know, an overture is usually used in reference to music or somtimes sentiment or subtle expression, there a band... Left is used to describe something "weird" or "arty" sometimes...but then there's LEFTOVERS, like yesterdays food or some old crap that no one wants or cares about.

See where I'm going? I mean it's kinda like DUST IN THE WIND or something....that is if you stop & think about it. Ya' know?

So,... Pardon me if I prefer to keep it positive, Yea totally, even simple when deciding to take time to comment on the works & labor's of others.

Carry On Wayward Son & Don't Cha' Cry No More. NO!

Love ya', mean it!

Joseph

Well said Joseph.

I wouldn't worry too much about Kansas, she's just a disillusioned foreign exchange student who's fighting a daily battle against the "contented moronic stupor of the masses." It's a tough job but someone's got to do it.

@ Oct. Thanks, yeah... This all has a familiar tone to it actually.

I remember that thread too. Good stuff!

Took the bait... Still, what else you gonna do on a Sun. afternoon?

Better check my room for pods!

:)

Great, thanks joseph.

Is nice to hear that you have more thoughts then 'Yes!... Good job!'. However, that whole argument referring to the trend towards minimalism in music videos being a reaction or evolution due to the use of smaller and lower quality viewing devices kind of baffles me. I mean the theory makes obvious logical sense but in the case of this video and also the animal collective one I think they actually require a higher attention level due to their ultra abstract and vague (faux metaphorical) nature. In particular even if I liked this video I can't see myself gaining much enjoyment from watching it on an iphone screen whilst on the train. I think I actually need things that are more stimulating in order to coerce the use of such devices in public but possibly females are better at multi-tasking.

I agree that minimalism is a good thing but effective simplicity in art, film and especially advertising isn't something you just stumble into for lack of understanding (unless your an idiot savant). Many creative people strive for years to reach the holy grail of portraying a feeling or idea in the most simplistic and direct form. All I see here is some film student's vague attempt at being 'atmospheric'.
