Parlotones "Life Design" Dir. Erik Van Wyk

Interesting. Nicely shot.
Truly enjoyed that video. The girl motif makes me think of Vanessa Beecroft's work. The moving light rig is pretty rad. The Honda spot that he did last year also made some interesting use of on camera lighting:
Oh man this is awesome! I'm curious to see what a version where the rig isn't so obvious would be like. Still, nice job! I'm sharing this on ma facebook.
pretty cool. i've seen several failed attempts at doing human zoetropes. i think saam did one that didn't really work. what saves this one is the fact that they show the rig, which is more interesting than the actual result. Dunno why the characters are moving though while the rig is turning. that goes against the principal of a zoetrope.
awesome!
i like the video except when they show the rig, because i dont like to watch both the video and the making of at the same time.
360° hungry? bts and it's The ParlOtones
Man, I don't think this works at all. And then to learn that this is part of a KFC campaign/collabo makes even less sense to me.....
As for the zeotrope idea, it feels not that. Comes across more like stop motion or 'freaky dance' (think sigismondi) than it does zoetrope. I think a major flaw here was the model's motion. It's just this weird hipster like movement - there's no clarity. We're not seeing people run, or jump, or anything 'readable'. It's like odd, sloppy, non plussed dancing.
You can tell right away, in the first shot, this isn't going to work. Someone involved thought it was cool to like "swim but not swim. You should feel bored with swimming." And that in turn, makes us (the viewer) instantly bored with your work.
And what's with the unfinished makeup on the dude's eyes....?

I've seen a lot of blind-branded / un-branded advertising... but this is the most extreme example so far... props to the creatives for selling this but seems like the clients are being taken for a ride...
Confused about how KFC is involved, seems like an odd partnership. And yeah, if you didn't show the BTS stuff, I'd probably think the dancers were just in stop motion.
I don't know the back story or how it fits into a campaign, but either way I think it shows tremendous bravery on the part of the ad firm to go to their client with such an unbranded idea and sell it through. I'd be curious to know how KFC is using the video as advertising.
I find it far more likable to think of a major advertiser supporting a video this way, as opposed to lots of close-up product placement shots being inserted.
Truth is that video budgets will continue to get slimmer, so if this can be a trend where business to business support allows unbranded videos with high production value to me made, well then I'm happy. I've thought for a while now that labels & bands and advertisers could come together and support each other without doing it in the most obvious of ways.
What if a band offered up a single or two for commercial usage to a major brand campaign, so long as that brand underwrote a video that would not contain product placement or branding. Thereby the band wouldn't have to feel like "sell outs" or become products. Wouldn't that be an fair situation for both?
This is hilarious. No one in that video has eaten fried chicken since the 90s. The last thing in the world that video made me do was want to eat fried chicken. I can't believe they have a branded fried chicken box. Ad dudes, you crack me up. Who wants to go back to the world of Mad Men when you can coast on horseshit like this.
erm, has anyone bothered to stop and check out the related ads? that's where the connection's made. pretty solid move from the agency, to keep the video "intact" and have the ads fly the cool of the music video. won't be an infinitely repeatable set-up, but seems something to welcome, no?
I enjoyed this video. Interesting concept, pretty solid execution. It would be nice to have seen a little more lighting (assumed super zooms on that rig).
And for my only negative comment that is regarding the cast. I'm sick and tired of seeing the same faces (skinny children people) dressed in the hipster clothes again. It's a new decade folks, let's not go back to the same shit.
@my name is legion: ditto.
Why show the rig? Once I saw it, it seems they could have gone a lot further with the aesthetic... anyhow... as usual with bouffant it looks nice and clean.
