The 1 music video from the past 5 years...
Five years have passed and people don't buy CDs anymore, kids don't know how to use a tape deck, MTV has stopped showing videos, Youtube took over, cleverness spreads virally, you can shoot HD video on a 2000 dollar camera and make it look as good as film...
...so considering not much is going on around here right about now, and any mildly entertaining video is considered a success, I was wondering which is the first video from the past five years that pops into your mind. I'm not looking for your favorite video, the one you think is the prettiest, funniest or sexiest, but for the one that left the most impact on your memory, the one that shows up in your mind's eye first when you think 'music video'.
For me it's easy, every time it's Justice - Stress by Romain Gavras.
The one that jumps out for me is 'We share our mother's health' by The Knife. Superb stylistic animation.
As for 'live action'... hard. Most of the ones that spring to mind are from 2003 and before. But if pressed, then 'Kyoteizinc' by Omodaka is it. Wait, maybe Poni Hoax's 'Antibodies'... ask me in five minutes, I'll think of another.
"you can shoot HD video on a 2000 dollar camera and make it look as good as film..."
Erm...really?
@ gwizzard New dslr's are changing the game, of course nothing is going to have the chemical quality of film, but look at these clips and tell me they don't look good: canon 5d& 7d: vimeo.com vimeo.com vimeo.com nikon d90: vimeo.com WIth the right lenses and color correction, 99.99% of people won't tell the difference between video and film, especially when most of the stuff produced nowadays ends up on computer screens anyhow.
Dethurah's Royksopp video is still superb to me. I find it kicking around my mind when I think of a recent 'great one'.
^ Agree lusk, Dethurah's Royksopp was definitely a stand out, and one that always struck a chord with me. Still one of my favorites.
@ pancho, I think you should get your eyes checked. All those formats have a loooong way to go in my book. They still reek of an obvious video aesthetic and it will still be many years to come before they get vaguely close to the look of film.
Massive Attack "Live With Me" - Jonathan Glazer
lol @ eyes checked. I never said HD video coming out of DSLR looks the same as film, but it can look just as good, yes it's a different aesthetic, but it does not mean it looks bad. That Royskopp video you like so much fits that aesthetic, sharp, dark and low contrast. I don't know what it was shot on, but it would look just as good if it was shot on the Red Cam. I like the chemical nature of film better as well, but don't let time pass you by, when for the price of a few rolls of film you can buy a DSLR camera that shoots HD with interchangeable lenses, unless of course you got 15k+ budgets coming your way on a regular basis. :)
def not his best but I can't help it! :)
