Kanye West - "Coldest Winter" (Dir: Nabil)
KANYE WEST "Coldest Winter" Directed by: NABIL "ITUNES link below" from nabil elderkin on Vimeo.
I don't get it but perhaps even worse for me - I don't like it and it doesn't entertain. It felt like a poor man's Encyclopedia Pictura video or maybe even a college student's thesis short.
I couldn't even get through that... really bad. Do I need to explain why?
Nabil: Total fan of your work and your collabs with ye. But I feel like this would've worked better if less fx driven and shot practically (i.e. what Dethurah did on flashing lights for instance).
Also, without kanye's presence, kalstark has a point, this has a rather spec-ish feeling.
Was this something you proposed to him and given money for? Was this his idea? What was the budget?
At least it's not rap/hip-hop which I don't like so it wasn't bad.
What's with those breasts!
Um Jonze directed flashing lights didn't he?
So my two cents... a lame idea, lame aesthetic. Seems like it's trying too hard to be something that Nabil obviously isn't comfortable or used to directing.

this is FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Flashing Lights, Dethurah: www.youtube.com
Sorry never saw that Dethurah version of flashing lights.
Nabil is definitely no Dethurah though is he. What video's has he directed where everything is shot in camera?
The only reason Nabil gets anywhere is that he has some relationship going with Kanye. He's hardly a heavy weight player.
You guys are all haters. This is pretty legit. I personally know the budgets on Nabil's Kanye videos aren't really near the Spike and Hype ones - it looks like they were able to stretch a pretty penny on this.
It's a simple idea, kept me entertained...I thought the visuals were cool.I mean what's not to like, it's better than 85% of the shit that gets reposted on antville anyway. (looking at you big league chew)
I think its an ok video
Elderkin told MTV that he didn’t even have to give Kanye a treatment. He presented him a basic concept and the next thing Kanye saw was a completed version.
“You know what, the funny thing is, he didn’t want to be in it. I wasn’t even gonna put him in it. He didn’t want to be in ‘Paranoid,’ to be honest. There was more Kanye in ‘Paranoid’ originally, and I took him out. He’s just cool right now with putting out visuals that fit the song without having to be in it. I think he’s in that place in his life where right now he just wants to make art.”
He also said he wanted to leave the video open to interpretation.
“Sometimes I don’t want to get too literal with videos, like, ‘This is what this is suppose to mean, and that’s what that is suppose to mean.’ I wanted to leave it open to interpretation. I want people to get whatever they want out of it.”
girl gets chased by demons, falls down cliff, giant hands grab onto her, and turn her into a demon
Knitpicks knitpicks. It's a grand vision and I like the video. And I hate the song. And I love the breasts. And I think it's great.
'Grand Vision' - 'just wants to make art' ???
I think pancho more concisely sums it up:
'girl gets chased by demons, falls down cliff, giant hands grab onto her, and turn her into a demon'
What's there to interpret?
wow i can believe somebody even took the time to put ¨examples¨comparing... I did MYSELF the last minute in Coldest Winter and i NEVER EVER saw in my life whatever you are posting...here the people seems so wise... you LIKE the video or just Dont..what do you espect?? what are you looking for? the MEANING of LIFE? what a losers. you are the same guys that critics this and then gets fascinated and melted by any stop motion abstract crap with a nice techno beat... Im sure if Kanye gives you to direct any video like Nabil does, you will wet your pants instantly. word i think you all needs to get a decent job and a life and direct it:) and stop being such a haters.
word
Incredible.
Printing and framing bakero's comment now.
And seriously, there's nothing wrong with this video. Nice work.
Yo bakero, cool your boots, I don't think anyone's looking for the 'MEANING of LIFE', sure some people here are pretty tactless and non-critical in their comments, but that's no reason to call everyone who doesn't like the vid losers or to slate the 'Nobody beats the drum', which was a blatant no-budget vid made with pure hard graft and inspiration (come on, the guy choreographed every frame to the track!).
For my money I wasn't a fan of this vid, I liked the aesthetic initially, but truthfully the video drags out a single idea to breaking point, I guess that's why it's shot in slow-motion so the idea lasts longer. It's look pretty but nothing really happens.
I'm not a hater, the 'paranoid' vid rocked for me (the opening minute long top-shot was glorious), but this video just didn't do anything for me. Sorry. I'm not a loser.
X
haha bakero complains about haters then hates on the 'Nobody Beats the Drum' video...
Didn't like this or the 'nobody beats the drum' video. Both in poor taste in my opinion.
