New Dougal
Not a music video, though.
I understand when people post non-music video related clips directed by video directors, but this isn't really worth anyone's time... Very pedestrian.
Oh come on brother, this is fine stuff.
Not a music video but lovely and gorgeous. I was more moved in 20 seconds of this than in 9 minutes of MIA's born free video. And I like seeing people explode.
on dirait une pub... et à la fin; oui c'est bien une pub. y'a donc du budget ! forcément.
When this began making the rounds the reactions got me perplexed. Technically precise, but... really? A woman's life is just homemaking, breeding?
what else do they do?
does anybody have a copy of Glazer's canned Flake ad ("The Devil")
its cool, but i prefer this vimeo.com
You did NOT just compare this nothing commercial to the M.I.A video. I'm leaving and never coming back to this post.
MVA - I have two kids. Maybe that's why it matters more. I suppose if they were redheads the MIA video would matter more. Ha. Again, I loved Romain's "Stress" so don't get me wrong - Born Free just didn't work for me, this did.
Optical - I would propose that your postmodern, feminist perspective misses the beauty in this and implies that being a "just a homemaker" is somehow a failure and that is not only sad, it misses the point. I'd argue that this spot is saying that family and friends are more important and meaningful than anything else in life, and the main character just happens to be a woman.
This looks like a Megaforce commercial for your parents
Proves that anything these guys make gets attention. It doesn't make it good though, does this spot actually sell what it's promoting?
The handicap of Music Video directors, exceptions included, is that when they take up an Ad it becomes financing for their short films. This pisses me off, as a die hard "sell the fking product" kinda guy some of these concepts obscure, not integrate, what they promote.
And don't tell me that I don't have a point cause I do. It's a fine piece of material but as a commercial, it is weak. Not a put down.
Examples of Music Video Directors who've made killer spots:
Bravia "Paint" - Glazer
Levi's
Gondry
And of course, king of it all, off topic (here's the Ridley Scott Apple Commercial).
Conclution: it takes more than pretty pictures to sell a product. Successfully. I'm against arty commercials but pro concept integrating branding. Thanks.
Victus, are you saying that this Dougal spot only has pretty pictures?
That's insane. And honestly, the Glazer Bravia ad you have above is so much weaker than this dougal spot. In fact, I'd say it's more moving than any of the spots you referenced and has more class too. Well, maybe not the Levi's Glazer ad, that one is one of the best ever but the others fall short. At least for me.
It's a matter of opinion, man.
Weak saying that the Scott Apple commercial isn't memorable, when gulp it was the one that put the company on the map.
The Smirnoff ad introduced bullet time to the masses, we know that. But it was part of the fusion that made it work. It sold the idea.
The Sony Bravia Ad got the word out there, effectively.
So that was the point of my comment, that sometimes Music Video directors and commercials don't mix, and vice versa.
I liken it to a recent tweet by Joseph "sell the performer" Khan:
"Videos w/ no band, no performance, no marketing, no musicality, & no marketing issues are easy. Nudity, violence. Zzzzzz... 2:08 AM Apr 28th via web
That's a far fetched statement for sure, maybe labeled at the M.I.A video which I think is effective, but not a music video more as a narrative per say.
As a commercial, all videos are. Sell the product in a variety of ways.
Judge a commercial on how effective as a whole the message is, overall. Sorry but I'm not so impressed by spot. The above are prime examples of pairings that worked, effective branding.
So yeah, that's what it's about.
Yeah I feel you. I guess I just liked the ad in general. Not as an ad really, but more as a short film I guess. As an ad you're right, it's not incorporating the product but aligning themselves with an emotion they've created. I don't really care though. I just liked it. There are great things about all of the adverts above and of course the Levi's ad is all time.
KAYSER: Yeah man, co-sign that. Anyone have a look at Glazer's newest?
Dougal was hired for his technical expertise. He didn't write the copy or conceptualize the video, the ad agency did.
damn copywriters
