Meet Radical Friend
Meet Radical Friend. Julia Grigorian and Kirby McClure are two young and talented filmmakers from Los Angeles. They are known best known for their unique and highly acid-induced, visualistic, videos like Yeasayer’s “Ambling Alp” and “O.N.E.”
lol.... hipsters suddenly given a bunch of cash and a producer to make their dreams come true... Oh bless the little ones.
yeah, is it mean to say that this grossed me out a little?
i need those shades
"....so then we moved to LA after that. Which was like two years ago."
sounds like they're trying to start an east vs. west coast beef
Don't hate, laugh. So on only two videos requires VBS.tv to feature.
@macguffin - lol
////barf///. Those glasses do nothing for his crooked nose. I bet he thinks hes the next Vincent Gallo.
the rich kids club:
Can we be honest for a sec and talk about how when we trumpet indie "creators" over the more "blue collar" mv directors, we're really just celebrating a lot of connected rich kids?
the Versailles rich kid club is the one that annoys me the most. so many have come out of there: Phoenix, Air, Daft Punk, the De Crécy brothers, Gondry, Justice ...
Many of them are talented yes, but there's something so annoying about rich kid artists that were handed everything on a silver platter.
it is frustrating every time i go on wikipedia to check out a director i like, the third line down is usually "so & so is son of famed novelist/filmmaker/artist So&So and his wife respected lecturer/painter/lesbian So&So."
it makes you appreciate the directors that have come up with no one's help. like, RAGE, my fucking homie.
Oh come on..... I definitely find it funny when directors suddenly become overnight celebrities because they happen to land a job where they have a bunch of money and production support for a super hyped up band. (Usually this is because they are friends with the band). However this doesn't negate the fact that the directors have put in the hard yards before hand making videos and short films for no money. (Radical Friend have done this, just do a search on antville and all of their past low budget stuff will appear)
These guys are definitely hipsters and their recent work reflects that but they also do have talent. We also don't know whether these guys are rich / privileged kids or not. Sure I get somewhat annoyed when you see the rich kid artists who are handed everything on a silver platter. Ofcourse its a lot easier when mum and dad are artists and nurture / influence your creativity from the beginning and then pay for you to go to film school etc... but still the rich kid artists that actually succeed have to put in a lot of hard work. Furthermore I dont want to diss RAGE but I personally don't think he could have made the videos that both Romain and Radical Friend have made. However I wouldn't mind seeing an intel creators special on him as well.
^^^ co-sign everything Kansas just said.
What they don't mention is they schedule 20hrs days for little to no money and have horrible working conditions. While they are the only ones to reap the benefits of burning out people and favors. Be curious to see them do a video with real constrictions (12 hr days, real rates) instead of doing low budget videos and abusing crew to get a big budget look and all the coverage they need.
les enfants terribles?..Vice? whats new..
Who agrees to a 20hour a day schedule?
'Real rates?'... who gets paid real rates in music videos?
I hardly think those Yeasayer videos are low budget in the scheme of things.
Low budget these days means 5k not 50k.
12-hour shooting day? on a music video? i thought it's 8 hrs and anything beyond that goes to overtime
the amblin alp video cost about usd 30,000
hmmmmm.
not sure about ALP's $, I do know that is was a hellish 5-day shoot. Money spread very thin.
ONE was 12k, 20hrs days, 6 turn around, no OT, 3 or 2 days. Rates were double digits.
People will work on anything these days with the promise of more work.
5 day shoot for Alps? WTF...? Who gets to shoot for 5 days on a music video? What's that like 5 shots per day?
Double digit rates?
i'd PA for free to hang out with nude models running down a volcano on mushrooms...
