It is very nice, but could use a little less screaming shots and more of your strongest piece, which is that black and white one. That could be your whole reel and commissioners would be looking at that. This is just my opinion. I'm neither a commissioner nor a director.
Shots of bands are fine, thing is I don't see what your angle is as a Director. That's got to be specific. You lean (based on your reel) towards the sublime and the introspective, like a Jonathan Glazer type (flattering you) but also pulls towards the other, it's a performance video director style. Best is pick your strongest pieces and go with that. The song is a bit of a challenge but it lets the visuals talk.
In order, here's what I think your strongest pieces are:
Mother/Father "Order" Asking Alexandria Silverstein "American Dream"
It's also too long. Rule of thumb (I'm not an expert) is 2M is right, 3 is pushing it, 4 is only reserved if you're in the top 5 directors of all time (hint). There are many directors who do band performance videos who are working, there are few who make a name by pushing the boundaries. Think about it.
Victus.
yeah too long… by 1:20 i was already jumping ahead… anyway i don't get director's montage reels. if you're a DP or effects driven director, that's ok. if not i rather see the work entirely piece by piece. that being said, if you really want to do this, you should choose a faster paced track and cut the whole thing to 2 minutes. but that's just me…
^^^ that is a co sign, which is what I tried to say. I'm wondering is the director responds or we're just wasting time.
Starbuck: I've never really been crazy about your work, but it's clear you have a passion for this so keep up the hustle. And I agree with the above comments that the b+w video is your best.
This is so tacky, Robby.
answer me honestly, Robby. Did you add yourself to urban dictionary?
captainmarc - original, not.
victus - appreciate the comments, thank you for the detailed comment.
brigs - also thank you.
lusk81 - thank you. the b&w video is my style & preference and first video i had 100% freedom on. very happy with it. the hustle is alive & well.
mva - tacky to post a video with 30 music videos inside of it on a music video news site - yes very tacky. I actually didn't post it an intern here did as they run our posts on antville but I completely approve of it being here because this site IS music video related. Only came into the thread after they told me there were some interesting comments.
pithatareus- you must have a lot of time on your hands - you may want to check out the cool 'robby starbuck' tshirts & mugs they're selling on that site:
you can wake up hating me daily then.
Aside from all that i'd like to say thank you for watching me progress in my work, it will and has only gotten better. that's the nature of these things. we all have victories & loses, it's about magnifying what you care about. on the internet that seems to be whatever gets a rise out of your fellow commenters. i am unscathed & enjoy the input. have a wonderful weekend antvillers.

RSM you might want to be a bit more selective with products you put your name on.... www.urbandictionary.com
robby, my only suggestion (and since you posted on this site i figure that's what you were looking for) is to have a bit more discerning taste. i know it's fun to shoot, but you don't have to do a video for every shit band that sends you a track. you can't tell me you're making a ton of money off those tiny, tiny bands, so what's the benefit of shooting so much? it makes you stagnant.
i also agree that director montage reels are completely useless. but i understand your need for it since 90% of the music you've done videos for involves a bro bro'ing out hardcore and no rep wants to listen to that for 4 minutes.
keep on keepin' on.

so, yes

Wow. I just saw your myspace. What's with all the photos of you? It looks like a very succesful emo's myspace. My suggestion, stay behind the camera and lose all the narcissistic statements and pictures. If I was choosing a director, I would find all of that extremely off putting. Just my thoughts... good looking reel though yo...
