Katy Perry ft. Kanye West "E.T." directed by Floria Sigismondi

floria is great, i like it
katy getting her gaga on stay candy girl, fits you better. :)
This video is pretty horrible. I mean, the song's lyrics and arrangement are really simple and dull, just like the 90 per cent of the modern pop music--Akon, etc. The picture itself is boring and generic--but also very badly shot and stylized. Also I don't get all this "rap/hip-hop" trend--why do they need to put a black guy into every single video? Sounds racist to me.
I have to agree with Kozoru on all fronts.
Kozuru, you don't like pop music, we get it. (And Akon is your example of "modern" pop music? He hasn't had a hit in almost 5 years, grandpa.)
I think it's awesome that pop artists taking more risks with their music videos right now. This could have been really silly fluff but the artist/label let the director make something much moodier and almost creepy.
I wasn't a huge fan, but agree with budget that it's definitely something different for such a huge act; she's not even in the video for the first minute and a half.
It looks nice though and the effects were well done, but pancho's right, this style of song doesn't really suit (I also hated the over earnest cheeseball that was fireworks). Kanye's verse/s were so phoned in it was sad.
Kozuru, you're hilarious!
budget, not everybody loves popcorn like you usually, i agree with your verdicts, but this video is far from moody this borders on tackiness, like a silly ass dxtp wallpaper and the wild life footage, thats even tackier this is shit, to be honest, theres nothing bold to it
Is it perfect? No.
But it tests the boundaries of what a Katy Perry video can be, and that should excite anyone who cares about music videos. There isn't a single KP video in the world that could make most antvillers happy (they couldn't get past the music anyway, as evidenced by Kozuru's "critique" of the video, erm, song) but for the average viewer, this is a trip. It might not resonate with antvillers and their kneejerk disgust for anything remotely pop (c'mon guys, that's such an outdated attitude!) but you aren't her audience, anyway.
Kanye kinda ruined this track. Even if it's almost exactly like that one t.A.T.u. song, I liked it a lot... but then the remix was born. It was originally this open-ended idea of falling in love with someone who exists outside of your world (the space theme being a cool metaphor), then Kanye comes in and makes it about taking her clothes off and probing her ass with his big-headed cock on Mars. Hey thanks, Kanye! The whole “space thing” didn’t need to be that explicit and it’s not at all about having sex with aliens, but thanks!
It’s not like it was a great song in the first place, but his 1.5 verses stick out so badly - the definition of lame, $oulle$$ collaboration$.
All that said, the video has a great look and you're right, budget, it actually holds a specific tone other than "FUCKIN PARTY!!" for some time (amazing - you can't say that about any Rihanna video). I think the concept should have developed more - the Wall-E opening dangled for a little too long before we came back to it.
But again, the video is building up to this climax, then it slams on its brakes so Kanye can phone in more wordplay on probing ass and abducting women from bars (ON MARS!), then it continues the climax of the video, but the momentum is gone.
Shout out to Floria for letting that horribly-placed half-verse at the end stick out even worse. Who knows if she even tried to make that work, but SOMEBODY involved with the process had to see how unnatural Kanye's presence was in this song. Overall lame video, though.
Edit: Hey Kozuru, explain this "'rap/hip-hop' trend" you're referring to. Is it the fact that it's undeniably the most popular genre of music in western culture? And what's with the half-assed "racist" callout on music videos? That made no sense.
Whether this works or not is kinda moot. Floria really tried going for something here...
Anyone know the budget?

I wanted to like this but it just left me feeling cold. I think pop videos work the best when they hit you viscerally and emotionally. It'd be great if they also get you intellectually but let's be honest that's not a requirement of good pop.
Unfortunately, Floria's video for Katy doesn't really work on any of those 3 levels. It's daring and that's cool but I don't think this can be called a success from a critical standpoint because almost everything about it feels kinda sloppy. It as if the budget couldn't quite stretch to fit the vision...
On the other hand, the YouTube fans seem to like it well enough.
back in the day, i used to love floria's music videos, but die by the drop and this one are watered down versions of what she used to do @budget - i dont think antvilleans dislike pop in gral, but then there's good pop and there's tacky pop and am afraid your video falls into the latter category 2.bp.blogspot.com
budget, was rappy music "undeniably the most popular genre of music in western culture" fifty years ago? I doubt. That's what I call "rap/hip-hop" trend. And what I mean is why couldn't she sing this rappy verse herself? No, she called her rappy slave black man Kanye. Look at the picture bodysong's taken. Kanye looks really sad.
this video is food for thought - made me plunge into deep thinking about mankind and its bittersweet destiny: how will the two protagonists at the end repopulate the earth since she's got antelope legs and, presumably, antelope sex organs. also, the butt naked guy might want to downplay his hips, they're too large, almost like a woman's. is he then supposed to bear children, instead of her?
better off having sex with deer than with seals
Kozoru, you're an idiot, I can't even be bothered to explain why.
Well, I wish I was cleverer :-( But ain't it an idiocy to call a person you've never even met off-lines an idiot? Anyway, happy Day of the Fool, Gregs. Cheers.
Kozoru just jumped off the cliff with that last comment. I don't know if you have balls or just never speak with other human beings besides the KFC drive-thru guy, but that was some truly ignorant shit, brother.
Rico, I'm not ignorant, in fact I know much more about "hip-hop" music than you. I was raised by the streets really. Unlike you I studied in no university but in the university of life. When I was a lil' kid I was rapping all day long in the streets and listened to all sorts of the rappy music bands--Two Packs, Limp Biscuits etc.--when you probably weren't even born.
Hahahaha that's great, you had me going for a minute there. Happy April Fool's
LADY KAKA
You guys don't seem to like anything, if like is any indication. Budget said good points, which this video wasn't made for your hipness. It wasn't made for you, in fact. Rebecca Black rules the airwaves and there's a savvy at play which goes under your noses. Since there's a purity about what is good and what isn't in this site, viewers don't care. That's an insider thing.
Floria did a great job no doubt fitting those parameters while still retaining her vision, my only opinion is that Katy Perry may be the wrong artist for it. When people like her branch, it's out of place since she isn't what I would call respected as an artist / musician whatevs.
Kozoru you'd do best getting out of arguments, this is a depressing forum to argue right from wrong.
rappy music ?
My favourite rappy music video is Wayne Little & Fatty John - “Make it Rainy”:
And also Nelly Lunatic “Tip Drills”:
And The Fifty Cents “D.I.S.C.O. Infernal”:
