Ace Hood - "Hustle Hard (Remix)" (Dir. Gil Green)
Let's trace this back...
- 1990s Mark Romanek-approach + Hip Hop = Jay-Z - "On To the Next One" [excellent]
- "On To the Next One" + 1 gallon of mediocrity + 2 quarts of artistic apathy = Lil Wayne - "6 Foot 7 Foot" [hilariously bad]
- "6 Foot 7 Foot" + 3 cups of laziness + 1 more gallon of mediocrity = Ace Hood - "Hustle Hard Remix" [officially numb to this shit now]
“Hey guys? You know all that cash you’re counting during these takes? Well that $8,000 you gave us for this shoot wasn’t enough to pay for a lunch for the crew. Is it cool if we could get some of those hundos so we can eat today?” “NAH MAN WE GETTIN IT IN WE HUSTLIN!!”
“Yeah, no, I understand you’re getting it in, we see that. It’s just, you spend all of that money on things you don’t need, like $8 million Maybachs and more shoes than Mariah Carey. You paid us a small fraction of the cash you’re tossing around here to promote your name and image, and even though that’s nowhere near enough money to do an adequate job of that, I still wanted to know if we could get just five of those hundred dollar bills so we can eat and not feel like subhumans when we go home to our families at night. What do you say?” “NAH MAN WE GETTIN IT IN WE HUSTLIN!!”
“sigh Alright, roll playback…”
There have always been good rap videos and bad rap videos.
This is a song from a mixtape, the video was probably thrown together in a day, produced around 5 busy rappers' schedules. Not every rap video is made under the same circumstances as 99 problems (tons of money, a brief that calls for something cinematic, a rapper who's trying to make a bold statement), sometimes you just need a visual that's passable as web content for hip hop sites.
Obviously it's a video meant for the Worldstar set, and God are those hilarious. But it's not only a track from an album, it's Ace Hood's biggest single yet (hear this remix every day on the radio). And when Colin Tilley is considered the best hip hop director right now, I'd say 99% of them are lame.
