Lady Gaga "Yoü and I" - Dir: Laurieann Gibson
It sucks that her videos do nothing for me anymore. The last one that had a glimmer of "whoa" to it was Born This Way.
Everything since then's been a bunch of jib shots and Anthony Mandler-esque vacuum-sound sections thrown at the wall. Her videos were crafted in a cool way and were actual entertainment to me, which was exciting. Now I can't even watch them all the way through. Oh well :(
"This video is private. Sorry about that."
I love her earlier work, the law of diminishing returns is kicking in.
The dilemma with big popstars is, after the references it loses momentum and routine becomes normal. Rather than feeling new it's a shop of Manson / Sigismondi shots thrown in with Tarsem. Where's the video? I don't think I gotta be sorry to be harsh with arguably the biggest pop star in the world, she hasn't shown up since the last two.
My last comment is directed at post. 90% of the big videos are edited in that caffeinated, twitchy style that works shit on coverage chosen. That aesthetic sucks.
The video was moved to her Vevo account - here be the new link: www.youtube.com
My comment about the Mandler-vaccum-sound sections turned out to be more real than thought - I looked at all of his recent videos and they almost always start with cranked-up room tone set to a slow-motion shot of silk blowing in a breeze or a torch burning or people walking. Way to trick your artists into thinking their videos are artistic milestones - he's made more than a healthy living off of it.
the cell reference notwithstanding, i think the video looks great; photography is sexy, and so is the blonde lady gaga
fixed. reminded me of sigismondi video for manson. also do i see a reference to malick's badlands?
it feels like a pile of reference not a music video, she needs to stop "directing" her own videos which is essentially what she is doing.
she needs to hire a fucking director.
it's pretty amazing how she had 3 huge video hits in a row - Paparazzi, Bad Romance, Telephone - and then followed that with 5 videos that really don't compare. And yeah, because those 3 videos were directed by real directors; and not just Gaga and her manager or choreographer or however it's been done.
Didn't Kahn have a mermaid in the video he walked from? Did they just rehash the concept and do it for another song? I'm confused.
The biggest disconnect is how the same artist that made this song decides that a mad max/manson homage is the best video illustration.......
Why is some of this visual creativity not in any of her music? Near unlistenable, this.
Agreed, the song is horrendous. I loved when she played it on the piano on the Today Show last summer, but this production is horseshit.
She's in a really common but understandable headspace that a massively popular artist retreats to. She has two choices here:
A - Have complete control over your music video (or even direct it yourself) and find personal satisfaction in it, retaining something intimate with all of your work amongst the chaos of world tours/interview circuits/critical and popular scrutiny. B - Give the reins over to a professional director who's much more talented than you are, and have a video with much more potential for greatness.
She's long gone through Door A. Not to say Door B will always end with a better video (there's a lot of hacks out there), but it's LADY GAGA - even Mark Romanek said he'd come out of retirement to work with her, if she asked.
I think Bad Romance was the last time her video truly nailed the song, and somewhat matched the picture you could have in your head for it. Telephone and Alejandro were nothing like you could have pictured, but they were still really entertaining (personally). Born This Way started off interesting, but devolved into a snoozefest (Zombie Boy was the only redeeming quality). Judas was boring, Edge of Glory was a trainwreck, and this video is unwatchable.
It's too bad, man.
