Tyler, The Creator "Bitch Suck Dick" - Dir: Tyler, The Creator
NSFW
And how is this better than most of the spam/student film/ no budget stuff we all hate so much?
its a music video and my immature humor enjoys it.
This is really bad.
Odd cause his last directed clip was so cool; he did something really distinct on a low budget. This makes me think that was some kind of fluke.
^ not sure what you expect out of a song named bitch suck dick. something more artful? haha
that's a good point.
I don't like this. I don't like this at all. I think it's meant to be satirical but it's not smart enough to really make fun of its topic. Instead, it comes off like just another entry in the bitch/hoe/rims genre; albeit a slightly self-aware one.
Full disclosure - I was speaking with a really cool manager for an A-list artist about shooting a video for said artist and the manager mentioned that videos don't have to cost much anymore. He referenced the Tyler, the Creator MTV award winner and told me that this was what management and labels wanted to see nowadays and that budgets needed to come down even further.
He has a point, artists, mgmt, and labels all want something that feels fresh, authentic, and cool. My contention, though, is that if you don't pay real money you won't have real professionals.
This means, at best, you'll end up with geniuses who shoot one or two videos and are quickly stolen away by commercials or long-format. More likely, you'll see a slew of one-hit wonders, who run out of steam the moment they realize they can't make a living and no one wants to do them favors for their next free project anymore.
Finally, and all business aside, I mostly feel bad for the women they cast in the above video...
Kal, I'm going to have to disagree with your manager friend. Tyler can do low budget stuff cause that's his aesthetic. A really glossy video for Tyler would go against his music and persona. but look at this year's other Mtv award winners like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Adele. They all had beautiful, iconic videos that were executed with a proper budget. Thinking that the Yonkers video is going to start a trend of low-budget videos for A-level stars is as silly as saying the same thing 10 years ago after Praise You came out. Every label wants to save money, but only so many artists make sense with no-budget, silly viral videos. And every artist has a different vision for their videos, it's impractical to think that each one will want a variation of a handi-cam shoot with a bunch of animal costumes. If labels want to try this, they'll come face to face with a bunch of cheap canned videos and upset artists in no time...
Also, Yonkers might have been (relatively) inexpensive, but it was a really well-executed video. This is garbage. Something tells me that if this is what Yonkers had looked like, it wouldn't have been such a "lightning in a bottle" moment for Tyler.
Hey Budget, no worries about disagreeing with my manager friend. He's a nice guy and he calls it like he sees it but on this point I disagree with him as well. Unfortunately, a lot of artist managers, indie labels, and even some label video commissioners are using the success of the odd viral video as justification for ever smaller budgets (in reality budgets continue to fall because labels aren't making money on anyone but the biggest pop stars).
We keep getting called to shoot $7-10k videos for recognizable names. Sure, these artists aren't the mega pop-crew but these are people that have shot $60-100k+ videos in the past. Initially we were turning that stuff down but it seems like if your name ain't Bieber, Perry, Knowles, or GaGa then $20k and below is where your budget will sit. So, now we have to consider them...
song is decent, but i dislike the video theres a huge difference between this and yonkers in terms of aesthetics. whilst a low budget ( you say its a low budget and i take you for granted), it was elegant, well directed, good artist perfromance, it had a story, a sense of thrill. and the track was a banger, mind you
whereas this shit is just shit
