A quirky music video from New Zealand!
In the way that Chris Hurn's infectious new single 'Day of my Escape' is not your typical upbeat pop song, the latest collaboration with director Aaron Ly is not your typical music video. Filmed in Ohariu Valley, near Wellington, the music video portrays Chris as a ragged vagabond trapped in a pillory, situated in the middle of nowhere. While he attempts to escape, Chris is joined by four lost and embattled characters at crossroads.
In essence, the video conveys that overwhelming desire to escape facets of our own lives, and the struggle to maintain any balance or order with the choices we make.
Renowned veteran NZ cinematographer Waka Attewell (Billy T: The Movie, Starlight Hotel) provides the video with a strong and evocative visual style. The result is an engaging and thoughtful video embracing the emotionality of these characters conflicts against the surreal backdrop of the serene New Zealand landscape. The pillory that Chris is imprisoned in providing the perfect visual and thematic centerpiece to encapsulate the unique nature of his latest pop song.
Directed and edited by Aaron Ly and produced by Reece Baker, this music video was funded by NZ on Air.
'Day of my Escape' is the third single off Chris Hurn's debut album 'Too Busy Dreamin' released through Monkey Records last year. Although only 22, Chris played all the instruments and recorded the album himself which has been well-received by critics with some even comparing him to such songwriting legends as Bob Dylan, Nick Drake and Paul Simon.
