I'm always surprised by how many people love Imitation of Life.
I'm actually surprised it didn't place higher in Antville's 2K list. For me, it's the epitome of a great concept with even greater execution. Blows my mind every time I watch it.
a nice list, though a little heavy on the indie stuff (only 3 of 50 were black artists, what is this, Rolling Stone?). It's interesting to see how so many indie-pop videos were well-funded in the early 00's. That's a genre that's all but disappeared in the last few years. Thx for making this!
Thanks, but don't you mean "what is this, Paste Magazine?" :)
Do you mean indie-pop videos have disappeared or the indie-pop genre as a whole? If it's the latter I'd disagree (unless you're using "indie-pop" to exclusively categorize C-86/twee-pop music). The dream-pop, indie dance/electronica scenes (which is usually still considered indie pop) are as prevalent as ever right now.
Sorry, i should have said that well funded indie pop videos have all but disappeared in the last few years. There was a time in the mid-00's when major labels were betting big on indiesh/alt acts (maybe blame it on The OC soundtrack for getting their hopes up?) and throwing money at their videos. Since pitchfork reviews aren't selling records anymore, the same band that would have had a six figure budget in 2005 is now asking their film school friends for freebie videos.
gotcha, agree completely that there isn't a big push for major labels to sign popular indie acts like there was in the mid-2000's (Death Cab, Decemberists, Interpol, among others) or at least it's happening much more quietly. It seems the biggest breakthrough indie acts like Phoenix, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire are staying on indie labels now.
Without "99 Problems" this list loses all credibility
I feel like antville is actually stuck in that era still, constantly waiting for the next MGMT or Yeah Yeah Yeahs to come back and resurrect the age of bigger budget indie videos. Ironically, if Patrick Daughters were starting his career now, he'd probably be pitching on David Guetta or Macklemore videos. In other words, wow, time flies.
