progosk (Philip Rogosky) dead in Rome, 2024 at 56

image (C) the Daily Mail

via METRO: In March 2024, 'On Sunday, the body of Philip Rogosky, 56, was found by a passerby in Insugherata Park with a plastic bag near his face, ‘connected with a tube to a helium tank’ – leaving more questions than answers for his family.’

Remarks his wife, ‘He’s been in remote corners of the world and always came back. It’s just absurd that he went out to chuck the garbage across the street and just disappeared. Everyone close to him is surprised.’

Commenter biogeo:

Last year, in a thread on the Blue about MetaFilter itself, he wrote this comment, which I saw just now:

'
I think I suffer from a similar type of aphasia that has kept me from successfully connecting screennames to full-fledged personas, but there has been a (periodically reconfiguring) number of contributors here that have consistently made the blue (and its gamut of spaces) a unique ecological niche on the internet for years now, making it a homestead to so many of us. There’s no denying the Gesamtkunstwerk of it, warts and all. It’s rare to see real-word attempts at actually making things better, something that, even in failure, surely sets an example to draw hope (or other inspiration) from. A kind of epic. And a privilege - thanks to all for keeping on keeping on.
'

I think he put it very well. I fortunately don't suffer from his aphasia, as he put it, and so I remember him as he presented himself to us here, one of our fellow homesteaders in this unique ecological niche on the Internet. He'll be missed here. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I’m really saddened by the loss, even though he gave up on antville some time ago. I’m a commenter on Metafilter so I saw him over there, but had little idea of him killing himself, or otherwise.

That's shocked me somewhat I do recall him well, and gave him a bit of a ribbing once, twice or three! Sad! My respects and condolences to his family

It’s a terrible tale.

All deaths are, sadly! The circumstances regarding the disappearance and discovery loosely follow the death of DJ Derek a Bristol Reggae DJ. Well known in his home town and around the country. And while they say "found after a high profile search, which I'm sure there was initially! It was eight months later his body was found by a member of the public, in undergrowth near a shopping centre! www.bbc.co.uk

Much closer to home a brother of mine Mark (second youngest) suffered a somewhat similar death? He had moved to my sisters in Ireland when he was 18 then returned to England in his mid 20s I lost sight of him for years as he settled in London, but my youngest brother Andrew would see him around Wood Green and the pubs he frequented but it was just luck, any sightings, Mark lived in Squats with a like minded crew, their recreation alcohol and drugs, a transitory lifestyle selling The Big Issue or begging! My brother Mark was in receipt of a government sickness allowance which he cashed from a booklet every week! Andrew was a plaster good skilled tradesman often travelled to London Good money was to be earned there at the time! Mark after a few years further absence tuned up at my mothers house, back home in Ireland with a Girl from Australia (Rebecca) for a visit They then returned to London, lost touch again but the girl Rebecca was still with him Eventually her visa ran out and she had to return to Oz, whilst filing for a new one. They kept in contact but communication suddenly ceased! With her visa renewed she returned to London, sought out his crew, only to find they had not seen him for months but they had been cashing out his sickness benefit since he disappeared! Rebecca was pretty determined, understood something was not right and went to great lengths of enquiry to find him, eventually identifying him from a photo at Stoke Newington Police Station. I went to the Inquest but they couldn't determine the cause of death due to the decomposition when found. We shipped him home to Ireland and buried him My mothers wish! Rebecca later confided to me the day he was last seen by the pals who made so free and easy with sickness pension, happened after they had come across a bottle of pills of unknown toxicity or effect it would seem my brother took them maybe. It did not show up in the autopsy? The world often aint that nice a place!
