Wow. I give up. That was incredible.

lusk81, January 22, 2005 at 1:38:42 AM CET

The best part of this video is the incorporation of the actual track. It's amazing. We never know if we're hearing the same song. And when we go into the bar and lose the music all together only to recreate it again - my god, that's fuckin great.

But I can't throw my arms in the air like Binky. Cause you know, it's funny to see a cat throw the keys on the table, but the kiss/dance section (and the overall incoporation of a boyfriend cat) is just wayyy too dopey for my sensibilities.

binkystick, January 22, 2005 at 1:55:03 AM CET

Ah yes, delectibly dopey.

langdonallger, January 22, 2005 at 2:31:35 AM CET

The song was pretty awesome, and so was the cat throwing the keys on the table, but the rest of the video is just bjork walking around and drinking. Meh? I haven't been wowed by spike jonze since "weapon of choice".

yossy_great, January 22, 2005 at 4:55:24 AM CET

The sequence that Bjork parks her car onto the street is strange.

Quicktime file by bjork.com

krof, January 22, 2005 at 5:27:06 AM CET

song is exactly same version that is on the record... from car ignition to closing of toilet door and starts again in the morning

captainmarc22, January 22, 2005 at 8:09:57 AM CET

nah the song is radically different - that whole middle part is brand new - wondering if it was location sound.

On paper, there's not a ton of brilliant ideas but Jonze made a great video - it almost seems like he's moved away from the gimmick/high concept ideas he became so famous for.

Some of the jump cutting at the beginning was very amateurish - and the after-effects hearts were nice but last thing I'd expect from Spike Jonze -

does anyone else think that Bjork looks like the girl from Napoleon Dynamite? Still gorgeous, though.

killakillafornia, January 22, 2005 at 11:44:18 AM CET

this video is fuckign great. spike as done it again! damn... laugh out loud!

krof, January 22, 2005 at 12:44:21 PM CET

captain: jeah obviously the part between toilet door and morning isnt in the original song. my comment was reply for lusks "We never know if we're hearing the same song"... but i think i misundrstood what he meant with it.

So cute!...I love this video. Its simple, funny & kept my attention.

1manguy, January 22, 2005 at 2:48:16 PM CET

Thank you yossy for the Quicktime version!

lusk81, January 22, 2005 at 4:15:49 PM CET

KROF: It's not even remotely the same song as found on the record. For her last two promos she's PURPOSEFULLY used remixes of the singles. In this one, it's almost like the song (including lyrics) remains freeform and stream of consciousness like. Again, it's amazing to see them desconstruct the song, and rebuild it again in creative and interesting ways (we get more than 4 sonic changes). Such confidence!

I also loved seeing her production team but what happened to Rahzel?

CAPTAIN: I thought the same thing concerning the cuts and hearts. It seemed unfit and so unlike jonze. Agreed.

yossy_great, January 22, 2005 at 5:46:59 PM CET

Anyway, the part of getting into the toilet and kicking a post reminds us of their first work "It's oh so quiet" doesn't it?

ai, January 22, 2005 at 7:33:43 PM CET

I think jonze just sold a new concept for MTV called "Drunk celebrities". You really missed one interesting part: at the party everything look improvised (and surely is) then bjork smashes on the ground (look real) and then there's this shot on a desolated road where we're back at the fiction with bjork still with her bruise. That mix of fiction and reality (you can see the musicians and jonze himself drunk) is strange and interesting. BUT the after effects hearts and the cat's developpement really really sucks. But the treatment for the track in the bar is indeed great. Completely illustrate the layering voices concept behind the album.

The Video is really simple and funny. I like it. And i don´t care of the nasty After Effects Tricks. (there fun, too.)

mgp, January 22, 2005 at 10:50:32 PM CET

One really shouldn't take CGI too seriously. The effects are really nicely pitched - playful rather than geeky "real". I haven't laughed at a video in so long - the dance is magic.

ai, January 22, 2005 at 11:09:15 PM CET

It's not because it's bad cg. It's because it's pink hearts. It's so played out. The only thing it makes me think of is careless people putting pink hearts everywhere pretending they're nice and acting like a tamagochi fan. "So cute" dumb type.

binkystick, January 23, 2005 at 2:59:14 AM CET

Pink hearts are played out? What?

krof, January 23, 2005 at 6:57:17 AM CET

lusk: oh jeah your right. ...sounded same to me before listening the original... i blame quicktime compression for that ;)

cerberoleso, January 23, 2005 at 2:33:23 PM CET

hey, i think you're missing the point of that pink hearts. i'm sure they were intended to be so cheesy and kitsch.. i think jonze and bjork know what they're doing. anyway, the girl who owns the cat used in the video works here in Fabrica, so i can ask her explanations :)

ai, January 23, 2005 at 2:45:32 PM CET

" the girl who owns the cat used in the video works here in Fabrica, so i can ask her explanations :)" wow this is too mundane. Sorry about the pink hearts i got a bad personnal exp with them.

For the cat: [This is good]

stripedcollar, January 23, 2005 at 7:45:29 PM CET

I think the video comes together great as a whole - like most Jonze videos it ends up being much greater than the sum of it's parts. The ending is a little cheesy with the heart zooming in around their faces, but let's not overanalyze the video until our collective faces turn blue. I think true genius cannot be analyzed or really explained, just enjoyed.

haha! YES! That was exactly what I was thinking.

interesting video.

happy to see this video done!

Cool video...and such a great song. Love the story and the crowd at the bar and I dig the cat boyfriend except at the very end. I know Spike meant it to be over the top but for some reason I felt like it wasn't right...but it wouldn't have been good or funny if it was realistic animation either...so I'm not sure what to think. Maybe it just needed some polishing or something. I don't know. Gotta chew on that for a bit.

It was a wierd mix of angles, lighting, and cuts -some professional looking and then some sort of amateurish looking stuff all mixed together so you weren't sure what was happening. Interesting choices. It keeps one off guard which is nice.

question: do you think this video would be as well recieved if it wasn't Spike's work?

jacobw, January 24, 2005 at 10:52:34 PM CET

The video no longer seems to be up. Anybody have an alternate link?

a triumph of multiple downloads-

maybe the server got overloaded - music videos rarely make this list.

captainmarc22, January 25, 2005 at 6:08:16 AM CET

hey I just realized something - this video has homages to several of Bjork's videos:

sitting at the table w/ the candle: similar shots in Human Behavoir (when she is in the kitchen) - also sort of looks like some shots in Venus as a Boy.

walking home on the empty road - reminds me of parts from Dancer in the Dark

dancing w/ the cat: Possibly Maybe (when dancing at the end - does the same moves

and there's a couple others I think....

lusk81, January 25, 2005 at 3:27:43 PM CET

Captain: No way. I disagree completely.

stripedcollar, January 26, 2005 at 10:27:03 PM CET

Odd video. Could be a whole bunch of stuff, but my guess is it probably isn't.

i loved this video, im an icelander and i saw the icelandic premiere on a show called Óp.
I think this is the third video she shoots here at home. Its really strange seeing the bar Sirkus in the video. Ive never been there but after seeing the video i want to go there, its right near the main shopping street in Reykjavík and ive allways thought it looked wery ugly on the outside.... like some wery cheap dump.... but ive read that it is Björks favurite bar. I hear that Sirkus is the place were all the arty people hang out.. Ive read in one of icelands tow main newspapers that after they finished shooting in the bar there was a party there for the people invoulved in making the video and that part of the video was actually shot during the real party. So i think that the shots of everyone dancing, and Björk banging her head in the camera are not preformed.
