OK, I like the YYYs. I like this song. I like this video. But, can someone tell me why people went APESHIT for this video when it came out? I have friends who tell me it's one of their all time favorites. Mtv played the shit out of it. Everyone was proclaiming it to be the greatest thing, and I just don't get it.
It's fine. It's a decent performance vid. Is it just because it's a good song that people associated the video with it, therefore raising the level of the video to good to "OHMYGODTHISVIDEOFUCKINGRULES!"?
Anyone?
And why the hell is it taking so long for a new album?!

does anyone have a link for their other video "pin" directed by one of the guys from the band Tv on The Radio? Its a stop motion video that i remember liking...but dont have a link topressrecord, June 9, 2005 6:14:12 AM CEST
it could be cuz she's real fucking hot!!! err...or cuz of its filmic quality and intense 'live' performance. and, yes, it's the song. plus, every video, pic, or live shots of karen always catch her being goofy but in this video, we see her get all worked up and shit. as far as the cut, this video is just all too film.but, i think it's mainly cuz she's fucking hot.

Hot? That's debatable. Sexy? Absolutely, but hot? Hmm...consolelou, June 9, 2005 10:38:45 AM CEST
Have you ever heard a song quite like this one? I agree that she is hot & sexy but that is not why i think people go nuts for this video, its the raw, pure emotion that she brings to this video performance that really stands out in my opinion. Really love when the drums first kick in :)sdelahoyde, June 9, 2005 6:39:10 PM CEST
It's really well shot, but there's nothing special about it that I pick up on. Just looks like a regular performance video that was lucky enough to have a band who could act a bit.1manguy, June 9, 2005 11:44:02 PM CEST
Here's the video catherine was asking aboutPin (real)

I love this video. I remember the first time I watched it I was completely sucked in. I somehow truly empathised with her... the tear on her cheek... I don't know.So at the end when the fluoro lights come on it's almost like breaking the 4th wall and you're back in reality. It shocked me.
Hard to explain.

i think turf makes a good point, and one that is relevant to a lot of debate about QUALITY on this site. which is that compelling filmmaking is not only about the concept and the technique and cleverness (sometimes i think you get too hung up on this kind of stuff binkystick). there's a very important element of emotion and tone which is subtler and more difficult to capture. because sometimes when you capture a genuine emotion you capture a little peice of truth. that's what this video is about - the tear on karen o's cheek. you can tell she loves you like no one else does. you can feel it.binkystick, June 12, 2005 10:45:51 PM CEST
I try not to get too hung up on that stuff. When I work I'm all about trying to get the heart, essence and emotion across (though whether that's apparent or not is debatable). And I agree, this video appears to have all that, but I just don't believe it as truth. It's a well made performance video, about as good as any other well made performance video. And that's it. I don't think the one tear transcends that.
Anyway, it's just one cynic's opinion.
By the way, Dickensian, I LOVE the Fatboy Slim video you guys did (assuming you're part of Waverly). I'm glad I can now watch a QT version.
dickensian_hero, June 13, 2005 12:38:51 AM CEST
well i suppose everyone's assesment of what's "true" varies almost as much as taste, but i was just offering a respone to your question of why everyone went apeshit for it (particularly if you watch it in the context of the soul-deadening slop usually playing on mtv).thanks for the complement - which fatboy slim vid do you mean? we did two (though i assume you mean the one for "the joker" with the kittens)
anyway, the debate about what makes a good video eternally rages at waverly films, and i imagine that several of my associates would sway towards your stance on this one.
binkystick, June 13, 2005 1:55:02 AM CEST
Yeah, you're right. See? Sometimes two calm, intelligent people CAN end a debate in a civil manner on this board! Amazing.I didn't noticed you did two of his videos. I was actually referring to Wonderful Night. The kitten one didn't do anything for me (no offense...i think the blame falls more on the song than the video). But the Wondeful Night video is brilliant.

I just realized you did those great Brendan Benson & Thrills videos too. Excellent work! I'd love to talk more off this board, if you're interested. Go to my site & click the contact link.pressrecord, June 13, 2005 1:34:12 PM CEST
umm...karen's still hot.wilson wilson, September 28, 2005 4:38:51 PM CEST
there is something in this video that i understand why people went really nuts for it. her performance is really magical, the expressions on her face, and the subtle handling of the direction is all very controlled and well done. it adds up to something more than your typical performance video. it's actually, in my opinion, a very mysterious, ominous, dark video. i think it's excellent work.
