Help: Censored Music Videos
I'm creating an archive for videos that have been censored or banned. What can you come up with? You may want to comment here first, then go and look.. However your memory works best..
For more help, see its talk page.
One of my all time favs, the banned Enrique Iglesias video directed by Marc Klassfeld
Björk Cocoon got censored? with black bars over her tits (in the USA) or what?
I think we must decide between censorship against nude, and others. And maybe between USA and Europe.
it was banned aka not played. Should there be two categories? One for Banned, one for Censored? The two get mixed so easily.
The top of the page has a note about that, too..
Duran Duran - The Chauffeur, Director Russell Mulcahy (nudity)
Armand Van Helden - Hear My Name, Director Alex & Liane (nudity) butt cheeks for god's sake!
Audioslave - Show Me How to Live, Director AV Club (violence)
Marilyn Manson - (s)AINT, Director Asia Argento - I've never seen this, a link anyone?
Dr Dre (feat Snoop Dogg) - The Next Episode, Director Paul Hunter? (nudity)
Smack My Bitch Up - Prodigy
air - cherry blossom girl, dir.: kris kramski
2 european videos from the 80s: falco's "jeanny" (by russell mulcahy) was censored, as far as i remember. and so was guesch patti's "etienne" (by lydie callier), right?
and Britneys "i love rock´n´roll", or?!?. And whats about the 100 Videos with the Word "Shit" or "fuck" in it, which are all censored in the US, but not in Europe. Like "She´s fucking hates me" from some Nu-Metal Group. Or "It´s my shit / the shit is banana" from Gwen Stefanie ;)
There were two versions of Milla Jovovich's "Gentleman Who Fell" video. The first (er, censored) version has her totally naked throughout.
www.devilducky.com - that would be the link to version 1. It's acutally kinda really cool, looking at it again after a ton of years... The second version's in blah color...
the gentleman who fell is obviously based on maya deren's short 'meshes of the afternoon', in case you were wondering.
first version of madonna's american life
Thanks, frunch. I had no idea and am kind of newbie-tard to avant garde cinema stuff... but all the stuff I've read so far on Deren is pretty fascinating.
nice one, frunch. any info on who directed the deren pastiche? also: why not post milla to antville? here's the direct link (copy and paste into downloader).
wasn't u.n.k.l.e.'s 'rabbit in your headlights' banned? i'm not sure.
is it true that there's an unreleased/censored version of bittersweet symphony in which ashcroft gets beaten up by the folks he bumps into?
Saw a reference to Bittersweet Symphony version 1 directed by Walter A. Stern and a version 2 directed by Andy Baybutt and George Hanson. I've never seen an alternate version.
BANNED - Just did a ton of research and found more. Definitely forgot Cher's thong there.
Some interesting vids were banned! Lots I forgot about. I haven't really covered rap videos much yet. There may need to be some lines drawn, I think, concerning those.
I tried to provide some explanations for rarer vids.
Also I couldn't find coverage of Enrique's vid being censored/banned?? (Haven't watched it yet though)
ugh, that's quite a lot! had not expected so much …
which leads me to: in the case of a music video, is bad publicity (aka a bann) really good publicity? it might be, these days, when you can still distribute a video via the internet/DVDs, but e.g. in the 80s … when a BAN really meant a BAN …
It's always been true that if you are a pop or rock star and you push some sexual boundaries, getting banned or censored will get you wild press. If you aren't as popular, you have to somehow stimulate the zeitgeist to get noticed for being banned.
I think being banned was a big thing when MTV was itself a powerful force in music video & culture - roughly between 1984 and 1995 - and when it was easier to push the boundaries. Nowadays getting banned is a bit passé and dubious.
More to your question, I think being banned is always a blessing for an unknown artist. But for the big artists it's a mixed blessing. It becomes more a calculated PR move.
In the 80's getting banned was probably a mixed affair too. On one point you don't get your artistic statement out, as you say. But you get both press and a badge of honor for being "banned by MTV". Madonna was of course the master of this game.
[Maybe I should write a book, I could talk about this stuff for hours.]
Anyone know if Prince ever got banned? Cinnamon Girl didn't. He's done a lot of risqué stuff, but I can't remember nor find any reference to any big censorship issues.. ??
kev, it's definitely cool for the artist to get banned, i guess you're right on that one, but: bad for the director, no? everyone will talk about said artist, the song gets airplay etc - yet nobody sees your video. might be good for your street cred, okay, but … i figure it could be more of a backlash? … mhm don't know.
and: yes, please do go ahead & write that book.
What about add n to (x)'s 'Metal Fingers' and 'Plug Me In'?
fun- Oh, you're right. I wasn't even thinking about the director. That's a whole different ball of wax, isn't it?
I think you're probably right about that - directors in the 80's wouldn't benefit much from being banned. It's a good question! That's one I'd save for e.g. Mulcahy or Godley & Creme - they probably got some notoriety from being banned. But their concepts ripped others' to shreds anyway.
I'm still not sure if censorship or being banned is great today either for a director. Palmieri didn't dig it. No one likes their work being messed with. But yeah it's easier to get your original out on the Internet.
Ah you're making me long for those days again ;) Strange how we're in the beginning of the true third generation of mv directors, aren't we? It's invigorating to have a fresh perspective, but I long for more work from the masters of the past. I hate low budgets!!!
i actually missed most of the 80s stuff, as we didn't have MTV at home back then, and, ahem, i don't actually have a tv now, so a lot of times it s a kid-in-a-candy-store-like-situation for me ;-) great fun, in a way. highly recommendable …
as for today's MVs: i'd be interested if apple really takes its ipod/itunes/music video concept any further, there's lot of potential in that (artistically & financially), but it would definitely have an effect on the aesthetics (like optimizing for lo-res small screens)
Where can Apple go with it, do you think? I haven't given that any thought.
they did start selling videos on itunes, and there are 'rumours' of a more videocapable ipod to be released soon, so maybe there could be a new business model for MVs somewhere in there? if there were an actual end-user market for videos (apart from DVDs), and a pretty large one?
(they even got me to buy a bloc party video single, so hey, there s your potential)
but i m not in the industry, so someone like otaku or progosk might have more perspective on that.
hehe Progosk isn't in the industry.
Yeah I think industry folk have a better idea on this. The whole MVDGA v. record labels thing. I don't own an iPod and I'm still on dialup at home. I still haven't seen a video iPod either. Yay no money!
i ain't got no ipod, ain't got no tv, (i ain't got time for that now....)
i thought i'd already cleared this up: i'm a producer.
all i know is mv's are still looking like a pretty live specimen. stay tuned, i (for one) think there'll be plenty happening...
i suppose kev missed that one …
(pretty funny, i thought almost everyone around here would have an ipod. me neither ;-)
Ohhh! I was in Toronto at the time. lol
I'm poorish, I don't get to have too much tech.
pretty much the same here, whereas progosk will probably be enjoying the luxurious pleasures of the mediterranean (though i hear it s pretty cold down in italy, right now?)
kev says i'm not in italy, so i'm not sure i can tell you.
naturally, kev is suspicious. i think this italian story could be more or less accurate though ;)
(probably he's still out there googling you, just to double check)
Oh good Lord.
Cineteam! Yay!!
So you grew up on Washington Sq. and left NYC to go to Italy.... when? [I took that as present tense, don'tcha know]
he wouldn't leave us like that, would he? (it's getting pretty late over here though)
i'd rather guess alexanderplatz than washington square, actually …
all further enquiries will be handled by my solicitors.
works for me! Good night, boys.
