Blonde Redhead "Top Ranking" dir. Mike Mills
Part of a five-part series
Hey, hey isn't that Miranda July? She rocks. -j
very wurm. nice choreography. i'm kind of happy this went nowhere.
This is odd. I watched it – hated it then started writing my first post for about 6 months – which was going to be a spite fueled polemic- and then…I started liking it – the conceit – the cheek! The cosiness and the faux innocence married with the sanguine backing and dirty walls. Hmm. Sweet ‘n’ low.
the night after i watched this i had a sex dream about ms july.
Though I love Miranda, this is just like the Austrian artist Irwin Wurm's exhibit for 1 second sculptures. Only he does it with objects. He did a Red Hot Chili Pepper's video. I'm just jealous I didn't rip him off first.
Don't think this takes us anywhere new.
uhhh... budget?
although i love the styling and lighting and song, i kind of wished the song had been a tiny bit shorter - i could feel my concentration slipping away. but that was just me. what's that they say about the best ideas being the simplist??
This doesnt work.
pretentious garbage
hrrrrr, i kind of echo bicameras sentiments..... a latent appreciation is building; however i feel like it could have taken more of a thread and it really didnt need the "one pose per second" intro
mike mills 'hmmm i think i am actually so hot right now that i could do a video without actually having an idea.'
so post modern
i don't care if this has mike mills' name on it and i don't know who this lady is... this vid is a steaming pile of shit. if this was by a no-name director this thread would have no comments or all negative ones because no one would go out of their way to defend it.
seriously, what is this?
looks nice, goes nowhere, why the title on the front... didn't think it could hold itself up without explaining what it was? that's cos it can't...
"He did a Red Hot Chili Pepper's video"
He most certainly did not. The video for 'Can't Stop' was directed by Mark Romanek. Erwin Wurm is credited as an 'inspiration' at the end of the video - rather erroneously IMHO since the glossy, contrived, heavily art directed and big budget end product seems to be completely in opposition with Wurm's 'one minute sculptures' aesthetic.
Oh, I nearly forgot to add... I think this video is great. It fits the timbre of the track beautifully and has just the right balance of earnestness and whimsy. It works as a keenly observed lampoon of avant-garde video and as a more than competent performance piece. Whoever it was who said that they felt their attention waning past the midway mark needs to up their ritalin.
Miranda July & Mike Mills are 'an item' - if that bears any relevance.
On the DVD "The Five Obstruction" by Lars von Trier... there is also an Filmexperiement that comes whery close to this clip. www.imdb.com
Lars gives Jørgen Leth the brief to shot a film ... every 12 frames a cut... or something like that.
very good DVD. here is the YOUTUBE LINK: www.youtube.com
