Mims - "Move" (Dir: Keith Schofield)
Somebody get this kid more hip hop videos please. That was spot on.
Seriously. Since we're asking for stuff... give the man what he wants, a Ghostface Killah video!
kanye stop fucking around and hire keith schofield
2009, the year hip hop videos come of age...
This is what it's really all about. Good luck to anyone trying to top this.
filthy
Kickass :D !
Nice!
Really liked it. Refreshing to see a change to a blinged out rap video. I wasn't too sure about using the twist again that was in the Goose video but maybe that's Keith's signature. On par with Bad Blood which I think is his best promo!
crisp
ellipses? Geometry is NOT hip-hop.
this video is hotter than a 1/x as x -> 0.
but hip hop is wordplay and word power, yo:
"Ellipsis (plural ellipses; from the Greek: ἔλλειψις, élleipsis, "omission") in printing and writing refers to a mark or series of marks that usually indicate an intentional omission of a word or a phrase from the original text. An ellipsis can also be used to indicate a pause in speech, an unfinished thought or, at the end of a sentence, a trailing off into silence (aposiopesis)."
I mean, light years better than anything Codero and any other 'hiphop director' is doing for sure. But this could've been better. There's something about it that feels rather cheap. I don't know. I'm not sold on this...
this is lame...looks like a boost mobile commercial...and, conceptually, it doesnt really go anywhere...it's one idea...if you can even call that an idea...
my favorite part is when the line about 'model on my arm' and then we see a model on Mims' arm...whooooooooaaaaaa.....
seriously, i know videos suck right now but please...i've seen enough of this guy keith's work to confidently say that it's overrated and really really base
it's like he finds a funny picture or effect on the internet and tries to stretch it out over the course of an entire video...no layering...very very surface
the accolades he gets just shows how people are clamoring for someone to come in and do something truly revolutionary and daring
sadly, this isn't it...not even close...
BOOST MOBILE
Probably not Keith Schofield's mom ^^^^^^
corporate coward more like it
great....reminded my of some old spike jonze stuff.....simple, cool, fun and very LA...
what's with the praise people? come on, this vid is half decent. The strangest thing are the night shots. They don't fit in. Hey if we shot them why not include them anyway right?
I bet the slit scans looked good in the treatment but i'm not sure of the result.
corporateamerica, you are stupid and don't know anything about music or videos. please shut up.
I admire Mims still. He went from RAGE to Schofield, which is a pretty huge jump in quality (he's prolly on this site). Hip Hop acts should go for more of these indie directors. I can't wait for the De Thurah/Soulja Boy collaboration.
Looks like the Jonnie Ross twist!
Imagine if it went the other way around and indie acts started getting hip hop directors. Gil Green does the next Vampire Weekend video.
Not that's what I want to see.
@macguffin: lol. i can't believe i actually know who gil green is
aren't we already there?
Chester French directed by Paul Hunter videos.antville.org
Coldplay directed by Hype Williams (okay, not indie; but they've typically worked with indie directors). videos.antville.org
I'm looking forward to the RAGE / Bird & the Bee video.
Great video, but... "2009, the year hip hop videos come of age..."
I could puke!
care to elaborate, lloyd?
@Captain - Considering Paul Hunter has had many collaborations with Lenny Kravitz and had brilliant videos for the likes of Marilyn Manson and Deftones, I don't know that I personally would lump him into the "hip hop" director pile. I've always been impressed with his ability to make an appropriate video no matter who the artist.
Pretty awesome, I think this guy should join waverly, even if he is a few years older than us.
WOW... was that coldplay video directed by hype wiliams!
No wonder it sucked so hard.
I also cant wait for Rage's next video. It's always interesting to see what's created by a man who's creativity is fueled by the flexing of his own biceps.
I mean that with total sincerity.
Loved it. That's just me - don't condemn me for it.
But, seriously - what's up with the HATE? There's some deep, fierce anger on this site. Where does that come from? musicvideoindustrytherapy dot com might need to happen.
Hug it out or something before you all scratch each other's eyes out.
I enjoyed (and admired) that although it didn't grab me promo-wise like Bad Blood did
Wait, what is so great about this? Maybe we're just comparing to most hip hop videos in which case yeah, this is head and shoulders above the rest of it. But compared to the average video I see on Antville, I see no heart, I see no creativity, I see mostly unimpressive techniques (save for some of the twisting and funhouse mirror bits at the end), and I see more of hip hop video girls standing around with that "Oooh, he's so hot and smooth" look on their faces. How enthralling.
And it doesn't help that the song itself is more hip hop posturing.
there's a chance that you just don't understand hip hop?
This video was hip-hop perfection. The visuals practically danced along with music and helped bring out nuances in the beat. This felt authentic, intelligent, and daring. I'm thoroughly impressed and it's a fantastic start to 2009 to see a hip-hop video take such a creative turn.
Respect to MIMS, respect to the video commissioner, and respect to Schofield,
K
treatment & animatic (via m'ographer). a chance to learn; seems like a good antidote to kneejerk dissing.
great treatment thanks progosk
(im still blurry on how the slit technique works, can anyone break it down to dummies level -- or should i just learn to read more carefully?)
The simplest way I can put it is still confusing.
Video is a 2D grid of pixels, multiplied by the third dimension of time.
(X x Y) x Time
You can think of this stack of frames as a cube of pixels. This "slit scan" is just reading this cube from a different direction. It becomes...
(Time x Y) x X
It's a little confusing to call it 'slit scan' when it isn't some optical process but rather a digital approximation. It was not any special way of shooting, aside from slo-mo, though if it was not an aproprate speed and consistency of movment the results would not have looked like much.
slit or no slit, by far the coolest video (hip-hop, grime, urban, indie, nu-folk, art-wave, whatever genre you like) i've seen in friggin ages. It's not about the techniques, it's just that it's so effortless - best shot in it is just him walking and people flying past, not gimmicks, just a nice idea.
and yes. what is with the hate? and what's wrong with elipses... if that's what you wanna call them?
...
I'm also not feeling the hate here. Great job, Keith, that was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed watching it.
