OK Go - This Too Shall Pass [RGM ver.] (dir. James Frost, OK Go, Syyn Labs)
This is the way things go.
www.youtube.com - Version 1 Making ok: Part 1 - Part 2 - Q&A (thx daku, thx progosk)
Wow, pure spectacle! Awesome!
Yeah totally. Incredibly ambitious. Some stitching and retiming here and there, but really remarkable. And no shots, but this band makes better videos than they do music. Also, much love to that steadicam artist - damn.
wow.
(yeh, dek: fischli&weiss 4eva...)
Nice.
This is the SECOND incredible video for this song. Ingenious concept, Gondry-worthy handmade set-design, and glorious Steadicam work. Say what you will about their music, but these guys are THE video artists of the YouTube generation (so far). My mind is blown -- best video this year so far.
how come embedding is disabled?
INSANE!
they've outdone themselves, i give up. i'll be a farmer from now on. watching the slow growth of carrots and peas. i've seen it all now. haha
first thought "Ehhh Honda Cog ripoff" 2nd thought "who cares this is fucking awesome!" 3rd thought "who is James Frost? Dude's gonna be a superstar commercial director if he isn't already."
Yep that one was cool! But dan't think a great deal of version 1
james frost made radiohead house of cards. and its funny that this type of work - very white america clean, american apparel colorful, self conscious cleverness - is what makes for today's "superstar commercial directors".
def not a novel concept at all but very fun. so ambitious...
what I want to know is: why haven't OK Go been signed as a creative directing collective for virals/commercials? It's not like they're really much of a band anyway...
@bodysong I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the whole "indie aesthetic" is getting pretty mainstream right now.
nice details, but kind of boring.
@msm: WhoseTube?
ja, I know. That was a joke, Sauze. I just found it somehow funny, that they're starting re-shooting videos, because of embedding dilemmas.
@mcguff: "getting" there...? I think it's been full blown here for years.
@bodysong Definitely been building but I don't think it has even reached full blown yet.
Wait til Animal Collective win a Grammy
- Indie has been mainstream for almost 2 decades.
- What does that have to do with this video?
- You're wrong.
- It has to do with the aesthetic of this video.
- I'm super right. Indie music is just as mainstream as anything else out there. Check the charts.
- Sorry, but If you're watch this video and "Indie aesthetic" is what you walk away with, you might be spending too much time on antville.
exceeded my expectations after seeing the dominoes at the start....
amazing built set! Well done would have required some immense co-operation which is a feat in itself..:)
you want to discuss indie mainstream selling out video art aesthetics like these? i'd say you'll find it in this one www.youtube.com www.michaelpalmieri.com
I would love to see a "making of"
that kind of video which makes me switch off carpentry and tricks dont make up for poor, flat lighting couldnt watch all of it
making of: www.youtube.com and www.youtube.com
members of the crew are answering questions on reddit.
That was a fun ride. They just keep out doing themselves. Full marks
awesome
Those 'Making Of' clips are... boring. I want to see the steadicam operator's waltz!
OK Brilliant!
Nice one.
This is a twice stolen idea unfortunately.
This mouse trap / rube goldberg thing has been done a million times, probably well before there was television. Can you really say this is a rip off?
wow... vonpat, major party pooper, or just really good at sarcasm, pocking fun at antvillains :)
James said that it was 2 days of shooting till 4 in the morning....Ug & ambitious.
wow how depressing that their latest album sold 20,000 copies. I'm sure it will go up with this video but damn that's pretty insanely low for the first 2 months out.
That's the thing about viral gimmick videos, they might get a lot of attention, but do they get people excited about the artist? Invested enough in them to spend money? Do they make the band/artist into an icon, or merely plop them into a plug n plan concept?
As cool as these videos are, they aren't nearly as effective for sales as a video built around THE ARTIST.
I tend to agree with budget's conclusion here. Cool is cool but you still have to sell the artist.
