Whatever. Fuck these guys. If this was any other director regurgitating themselves so senselessly everyone would be down on it. However these guys going all the way back to parody themselves in an incarnation they had, rightfully, outgrown & publicly renounced is some sort of achievement? It was super tedious the first time around & the source of so many terrible cliches that just won't go away.
They had their moment of DIY-esque innovation & artistic merit, I'll give 'em that.
This is simply big budget drivel with a cast of irritating numb skulls that are becoming inescapable. Where's Adam Sandler? Where's Jim Carey? Why not Yakov Smirnoff? The kids seem to get a kick out of him these days. It wreaks of cashing in by any means available. FUN? IMO, it's a really sad commentary on the state of originality in American media today. These guys could have done anything & this is what we get? Pandering to the lowest common denominator? It's embarrassing. Can't they find real jobs?
Apologies for the rant, I generally try to stay positive with feedback. Guess I'm just honestly shocked, not to mention a little disappointed, there is so much excitement about this. Honestly, it makes Lady GaGa look like a genius.
FUCK THE BEASTIE BOYS!
lol @ Yakov Smirnoff. I had forgotten about that guy
@hipgnosist Valid rant.. a bit harsh tho... I think you're reading too much into it.
I love it when people make sweeping generalizations about "originality in american media today".
This obviously took effort to put together and it's gotten a great response. What are the beastie boys supposed to do, make less effective promos for their album just to make you happy?
arent beastie boys retired yet? theyre too old for this game as for the video, long winded jokes and an overal feeling of 'yawn'
am with budget.
Um, guys. Maybe you're frequenting the wrong site. Music videos are flashy advertisements aimed at teenagers. And that's why they're fun! You're going to feel frustrated every time you come here until you understand that.
and who exactly are you to tell us what to to like and what to dislike? to tell us right from wrong?. maybe u should consider keepin ur opinions for urself for a while. or, if u dont, dont start preachin, pretty please. its not like this video is gonna get any better only because u say so
Yeah. I know, I know... Embarrassed to get so worked up about it, really. Have been coming here for 4 years or so & champion a lot of under dogs. I have appreciated the form for many years prior & totally understand what a music video IS & what it CAN be.
Have always had such a love/hate thing with these guys though & this is certainly on the latter side. They did so much to further the DIY aesthetic at their peak & were real synthesist at one point, including their video work in long form. They did a lot to show that you could do plenty with less when they had great resources at their disposal. Always drew inspiration from that period. I.E. Pauls Boutique,Check Your Head, Et Al. This just seems regressive for the artist/director & a crass stab at cashing in by using sure fire tropes. Yes, I ask a lot from art. Especially from those that have been at their craft for so long.
Would have been nice to have seen this budget & resources go to something more original considering the privilege it implies, I guess. Just tired of the hackneyed, cliched humor on a 3rd grade level. I have many friends that were excited by the clip & we're talking people 40+.
Jeez...
Apologies again, On to other things. But I do wish these guys would progress or hang it up soon.
It's not a bad thing to dislike a video, i've panned a fair share myself. However, it seems like people on this site waste a lot of energy on ridiculous expectations for artists and their "art". Obviously the Beastie Boys are going to make silly, pop-culture referencing videos that appeal to hipsters. That's been their key to success for over 20 years. It's like critiquing Katy Perry for making glossy pop videos that appeal to teenage girls. Or wishing Radiohead would make more accessible performance videos.
And it's one thing to critique a video that's an obvious bomb, but this is arguably the most successful, talked about video of the month. Maybe it's not to your personal taste, but to suggest that they should have done something different seems as silly as telling this guy to try changing his running style.
as long as its arguably the most successful and talked about video this month, budget will like it
I never said I liked it. And you missed my point.
wat was there to miss? other than a bunch of truisms?
shut up legion lol
