_grau | experimental film
Not directly a music video, as the soundtrack was specially composed, but an experimental movie, that some might enjoy ...
This actually has some pretty amazing evolving organic animation, particularly towards the end. But you really have to be in the right mode to watch it. Like take shrooms and it would be amazing.
A very few artist and styles seem to have a monopoly on digital abstract. It's nice to see something a bit different.
RS3D: I enjoyed watching this more than anything else that has been recently posted on this site -- especially the beck promos. Ultimately I really like your taste in sound/music and truly enjoyed the short's pace.....
But I'm somewhat skepticle to bow to the idea of this piece as being some kind of look at the 'dark creation' of an organism or some sort of 'shifting primordial soap'. You stray so far away from anything even remotely narrative that ultimately this project becomes about nothing - or conversely, about progressive shapes and obtuse patterns against black and white. You could've went somewhere with this and now thinking about it, I have no idea what the opening title card was for (I dont believe this is some kind of inner struggle manifested via image and sound - nor do I have any reason to buy this as the purgatorial state of an unnamed and shapeless physiology).
Do I like what I'm seeing? At times, sure. But i'm bored to death by the use of certain chosen effects - in particular, ripple and morph.
And being conscious of said effects is absolutely a bad thing....
As for the name _grau (gray in german) ... it's simply about your position - neither beeing black or white ...
The "dark creation" and "primordial soap" isn't by me, it's written by Motion Theory. For me it's just different memories of my childhood and present life, well, in an abstract way ... and it shouldn't be seen as "motion design" but as a "living picture"... An example for the narrative side - the part where there is the button and the skeletal needle sewing ... it's about learning sewing as a child and still working clumsy in other areas :)
About the effects, yes, morph is included (but no ripple :) and I'm well aware that some parts are not as organic as others, sometimes because I like the almost mechanical motion, othertimes because I'm just a single person and not a post pro house with a handful of good artists/designers and programmers(I wish I had one for this work!) and I simply wanted to finish it and go on...
And finally keep in mind that we look at image things more often than others and are somewhat nerdy about such details ;)
Thanks for your comments and please share it, Rob
I think its pretty great for a one man piece. I agree it could have benefitted from a bit of a narrative, however abstract, and i also agree that recognising that things have been put thru filters is to be avoided, but often needs must - especially with restricted time & budget. but yeh its got a great mood & some parts of it are stunning - but i wonder if it would have benefitted from being edited down to around a minute long.
The lenght of 10:01 min (Leibniz, 1=god, 0=devil, binary system, blabla) is important conceptually and I really like a somewhat slower approach, where things have some time to evolve ... it's not a jumpy music video or cool motion design ... as I wasn't bound on someone else (no budget, just some people providing software, 3d scans,...), I just did what I was looking for :)
Thanks, Rob
I put up some sketches and a high res version of _grau ... Rob
